To my best understanding from what info you have included, I would be rather optimistic. The level of white blood cells are impossible to interpret with any accuracy. There are so many different factors that can lead to higher or lower levels, particularly in a situation like this. They respond to many different stimuli and infection is only one of them. Generally stress of all kind will produce a higher count. There is a large supply of them lying ready on the inside wall of the blood vessels, ready to brake loose in a few minutes if necessary. It is for example well known that taking a blood sample from kids will make them scared, often screaming. This alone sets of a high number of the white cells into the blood stream even in a completely well child.
Frankly, I would be far more concerned if the cell count was on the lower side, in worst case indicating a blow to the bone marrow with potentially very dangerous complications.
