Songs where the cover is better than the original.
First spot goes to my favorite musician Taj Mahal whose cover of "Take a Giant Step" eclipses the Monkees cover of a Carole King classic.
http://play.rhapsody.com/tajmahal/giantstepdeoldfolksathome/takeagiantstep?didAutoplayBounce=true Ray Charles doing "Eleanor Rigby." Joe Cocker singing "The Letter". Leon Russell on keyboards.

Orgy covering Blue Monday
Live version is best, although the band has flaming mannerisms:

I have to admit, I like Metallica's version of "Whiskey in the Jar" better than Thin Lizzy's.

Johnny Cash covered the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" and while it may not be 'better' than Trent's version, it hits home when Johnny sings it. It was his last video before he died

I'm not a big country music fan, but Garth Brooks' version of Billy Joel's 'Shamless' is improved by the woman singing back-up vocals.
Love the notes she hits. Les

A lot of great Led Zepplin stuff, esp. the bluesy stuff, are covers of older blues stuff...

Covered by The Corrs and Bono: Covered by Tim McGraw (I actually like Tim's version best, please forgive the video):

The most surprising cover has to be "Blinded by the Light," by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Most think their version is the original, when really the original was done by one of the biggest names in rock history.
But THIS IS THE BEST COVER EVAR!!!! (and a good cover of the cover) Last edited by the; 06-19-2007 at 10:13 AM.. |

I like the Byrds covers of Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man and Pete Seeger’s Turn! Turn! Turn!
