Keep in mind that 911 replacement engine cases bear no engine numbers. "Why, looky here...this car doesn't have an engine number. It must be a stolen engine with the number ground off..."

Another tactic I've heard is cops opening up car hoods and looking underneath to determine what are illegal modifications. More grounds for impound.
Do you think most police would know an illegal modification on a 30+ year-old Porsche 911?

I am not racing anything in a straight line in a 914
I do like the sleeper thing, daily ride is a vanilla looking sedan, but it is a GSR integra so it is sporty enough. Was much happier with it after I took the badge off the back, less challenges from various loud little cars at stoplights.

Current 911SC and previous WRX Sti have both resulted in the Police flicking on the lights and following me - in both cases they turned them off again when they realised the driver was an old fart.

Re: Is your Porsche subject to impound?

Most of the guns I own would also be impounded/crushed if I brought them to Calif. Also, my two-stroke outboard motor and two-stroke motorcycle would be illegal in Calif. My '85 diesel dually? Flattened. The lighter fluid I use for my charcoal grille? Illegal. My mace & air-taser? Crushed. Additionally, 7% ~ 15% of my income would be "impounded" if I lived there. No thanks...the "Golden State" sounds a little tarnished. |

I've never been stopped in the Pcar but just in case I always keep a roach clip hanging from the rear view mirror to distract him from whatever his original intent was.

I've probaby told this story before, but it bears repeating.
In fact, I have been accused of street racing by a cop. He was in an unmarked Camaro, I in my 993, about 2:00am on an empty road and I had no idea at all he was LEO. But since I had a few drinks in me and that road is pretty heavily patrolled at night, I did not take his bait. For five full miles he stayed right next to me, pulling ahead, dropping back, being a real idiot. I kept my speed at 59 mph in 3rd or 4th gear. Finally we came up to a red light. When it turned green I pulled away rather spiritedly, but still under the speed limit and didn't squeak my tires. He lit me up. His first words to me were, "You're gonna let some kid in a Camaro bait you into street racing?" Now, I'm no lawyer, but isn't that "bait you into" sort of admitting entrapment? I was polite but a little wise-a$s and said if I had been racing him, he wouldn't have caught me and that it was not illegal to accelerate fast. He then asked if this was a 993, I got to do the field sobriety tests (should have refused, but was sure I'd pass) and then he sent me on my way with an $80 ticket for no front plate.

I've had them follow me after beating their speed trap when out of town. I pull over and wait for them to pass. I figure they may have radioed me to another.
When the traffic enforcement cycles pull next to me it's only to check out the boy toy from behind their shades. I wave hello which leaves them blank faced. A local PD decided to tail me last winter, probably for entertainment as I only exercise the car late at night into the early morning. After the second block I slid quickly back to the PD station. I then told the befuddled cop to check me out here. Then I asked what his name was. Turned out I went to school with his pop and his grandfather chased my aunt around HS.

I am no angel and if someone wants to play a little and the road is right, I might play, flame away, I have done worse at P-car cruises trust me. A good rule of thumb is to roll down your window and motion the agressor in the other car to do the same, if they are not a cop, compliment their car, if it is a cop they will most likely not roll down the window and expose who they are. I love the roach clip idea.
