Termites again! What to do...orange oil? Termidor?

Sheez...these little insects are going to bankrupt me! When I bought my condo, the whole building had to be tented for termites. Fortunately, that $5000 bill was paid by the previous owner.

Since then, every summer for three years I've seen evidence of termites. Usually just a small hole in the wall or ceiling with a little termite residue. I'm paranoid that this is like rust on a pre-galvanized 911...what you see is only a hint of the damage below the surface! In any case, what do you guys use for termite treatment? My exterminator uses Termidor, but obviously that treatment isn't working very well. I heard of some new kind of treatment using orange oil on the radio the other day. Any experience with this? Thanks for any help...you OT guys always know what to do! |

I'm surprised Termidor is not doing the job. It is the best on the market. Are you sure the product is being applied properly at the correct rate?

Termite swarms are pretty enormous. You will know if you have an infestation. They swarm to the light at night so you should be able to see them flying in a lighted room. Or just go up in your attic in the late afternoon. You will see hundreds to thousands of them flying around if you have an issue.

Do you have any cellulose mulch around your house? If so, pull it away from the foundation, treat the soil around the barrier of the house, replace mulch with non cellulose mulch (rubber), and make it a routine to walk around the house looking for tunnels. I have a contract with Terminix because they repair any damage I sustain while with them. Its $300 a year, but termites are no joke here. Last edited by Shuie; 07-05-2007 at 06:45 PM.. |

Has anyone ever told you what type of termites that you have? Treatment differs from one species to the next. For example: drywood termite swarms will only have a hundred or so swarmers. They can also make nest or what ever above ground and don't need a lot of moisture. Subterrain termites on the other hand will have thousands of swarmers and need a good bit of moisture to survive. They will make mud tubes in order to move around above ground.

I'm not familiar with what species are in CA. Try to catch a few and have someone identify it before you look at treatment options.
