Thanks for all the replies, I can understand both points here. Yes it is my pet and my responsibility, but he's a cat. Cat's aren't exactly the type of animal to follow directions from their owner like a dog does, which we have. Anyway, I did note there are a lot of strays in the neighborhood and my neighbor hasn't exactly caught my cat red handed. Which he also noted that he has seen several strays in the same area on his property.

Our cats are very nice and don't cause many if any problems around here. About 90% of the day our cats hang around the house or the yard. They don't really bother anyone else in the neighborhood. I understand our neighbors concern, but as pointed out by someone, getting little animal leftovers left on your lawn or anywhere else is just a neighborhood thing that you kind of have to put up with. Yes, there is a line that has to be drawn, say if he did his business in a car or "in" the house, thats different. But this is an outside thing.

By the way, he's not the only one that's had animal problems. We have had and still have stray cats that live under our house and in the far corners of our backyard. We know they're there, but they don't bother us. There was only one cat that was ever a nuisance to us. It was stray and we relocated it. But it was Stray! Actually catching it was a combination of perfect timing and dumb luck. We would have taken it to the pound, but it was the middle of the night and we really didn't want to look after it.

I am assuming you live in an urban area- not somewhere that the deer and the antelope play. So, if I understand the question- you enable a cat, by feeding-caring- etc, to wander through the neighborhood and damage other's property. Do you feed your cat outside- are you feeding and attracting more strays?? If you heard about it from one neighbor, more than likely several others are thinking the same thing. It is the owners responsiblity to control their animals. Keep it inside, get an electric fence- which is what our neighbors did and it helped some. To hide behind the excuse that that is what cats do is foolish. The same argument could be made by a neighbor raising attack dogs- don't get upset if they attack, it is not my fault, that is what they do. Be glad your neighbor doesn't get a cow and let is crap all over your garage- that is what they do as well. I assume your cat wears a collar with id and tags proving its shots are up to date, if not in my book it is a stray. I would control my cat- or not be surprised if it ends up 3 cities away- heck you said you did the same thing.
Be a good neighbor- cats belong inside.

He is right, you must control your cat. You have no right to own an animal that wanders the neighborhood causing damage.

If it were me, I'd get a trap and send your cat off to the county animal shelter.

I like cats and have owned a few so I have some sympathy for you BUT:

I have a problem with a neighbor with a cat. The cat comes over to our house and taunts our dogs which gets them barking at all times of day or night. I've thrown bucket of water at them, but apparently that makes them want to come over more. The neighbor problem is that occationally one of our dogs gets out and of course he makes a bee-line to the house with the cat. Then the old lady there starts yelling at me, as I'm chasing the dog, to get keep my dog on a leash so it doesn't kill her cat. The law in Houston is that both dogs and cats must be on a leash, so where does this lady come off telling me to leash my dog.

Anyone have tips for keeping cats away besides guns or poison? I don't mind inflicting a little pain, but nothing life threatning.

Comparing a roaming feline to roaming attack dogs :rolleyes: The obvious reason cats don't have the same restrictions is that they don't pose a danger to humans. Cat's don't run in packs to rile up other animals and people. They don't dig up stuff or knock over garbage cans in search of food. Some cats prefer indoors. For the others I don't know how you would contain them unless you fenced (with roof) the entire property.

I guess I'm mostly alone here in that I have zero issue with roaming cats. I wish we had more outdoor cats as they would help control the seasonal rodent population. Unfortunately we have another 4 legged critter, the Coyote, that keeps the cat population in check.

I had a cat coming into my yard, digging around my garbage cans--tried water, kept coming back--finally shot it in the ass with a BB gun pumped 3 times--problem solved--haven't seen it back since.

If you don't want to take the steps to keep your pet protected, don't be surprised when something happens to it.
