Volvo Automatic Tranny Sprang A Leak
Coming back from a party in MA - luckily I was just about 15 miles from home - I noticed that something wasn't quite right about how the Volvo was running. It seemed to be revving higher than normal, and the accelleration didn't correspond the way it normally does. Before too long, it was driving almost as if the clutch was slipping.
I pulled over onto the shoulder and saw that something was leaking underneath the car and onto the exhaust. Sure enough, the auto tranny fluid dipstick was pretty much dry. If I let the car sit in park for a few moments, the car would drive forward for a couple hundred feet and then the "clutch" would slip again. I got the car into a parking lot and called a tow truck. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? Does this sound like a gasket, or am I looking at something more $eriou$? Also, is there a decent Volvo forum that might be able to help me? Thanks in advance.

Might be a trans cooler line, front or rear seal, or modulator valve rather than a gasket, but I'm just guessing. Crawling under might reveal something obvious.

Yeah I am planning on getting the car up on stands in the next few days... unfortunately this kind of thing ALWAYS happens during my busy time of week (Sat-mon).

You should hope it is just a tranny cooler line. Anything else on a Volvo tranny is expen$ive.

You must be mistaken. Volvos are bulletproof!! (I would suspect a line)

Doubtful, naysayer. Most of the info I've gathered points to either the front seal, tail seal, pan gasket, or trans cooler line, all of which are cheap and easy for a DIYer. Granted, I won't know for sure until I get underneath the car.
I just need the car running for winter.

hopefully.
In lots of cars, just changing the trans fluid in a 200K+ mile automatic tranny is enough to kill it. so even if it's only a line or gasket, running it dry until it slips, then refilling it, is very tough on it. there's a good chance your clutch packs are going to go. but hopefully not |
