Of course, I've been known to get things all backward .

Was your post meant to be sarcastic? Maybe I'm missing something. :D

Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, 2001: A Space Odyssey is today recognized by critics as one of the greatest films ever made; a poll of critics in 2002 ranked it among the top ten films of all time.[1] It was nominated for four Academy Awards, and received one for visual effects. In 1991, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in their National Film Registry.

See references.

Critical acclaim or no, I thought the film was remarkable and it has improved with age, IMHO, YMMV, FTW!

FWIW.

Best,

Kurt

yes it did. like any piece of art, as others have said here, you have appreciate it in the context of when it was created. it's certainly not the most accessible movie ever made, but without sounding too kooky, it really is transcendent of and in describing humanity, and in that, it succeeded brilliantly. I'd even argue that such a film could not be made today. it would be focus group tested to death to include Hal becoming a Transformer(TM) or something like that.
