I have learned a few things from some folks on OT and developed strong opinions about others, some good and some not so good. I can't think of any particular situation where I changed my mind as a result of what I have read here. If anything, what I have read has pushed me to do additional research on a subject so I think I have learned a thing or two.

I'm not a big history buff so the discussion on the South and Confederate flag is a waste of time for me. Not even amused by the subjects, the war has been over for a long time and there are too many other serious problems in the world today to fight over ***** that happened so long ago.

I've actually been very impressed with the (sincere) sensitivity displayed by many here when discussing personal loss of friends, parents, spouse's and pets. I think there are a lot of great folks on the BB. I won't dwell on the small number of douche bags that have come and gone.

In most cases, when I have asked a question, I got a legitimate and timely answer. That assistance has been greatly appreciated.

The Pelican society gives me a condensate of more knowledge, wisdom, life experience, interesting views and sincerity than any other input form I have access to in life.

Yes, I have a few very good friends but they are who they are with a limit input potential. I know a lot of people besides them, but it is difficult to get an opportunity to have a deeper, honest debate on such a variety of subjects.

This place is like a gigantic library of professional knowledge, wisdom and life experience. It is free and handed out by a group of very nice, generous people harvesting from each other.

You canīt beat that.

In the peaceful reverie of the gathering Friday dusk, I sit and ponder the heartfelt outpourings so earnestly and honestly offered here and hear the sweetly lilting strains of a tender old song wafting soothingly through my unchanged mind:

Don't go changing, to try and please me
You never let me down before
Don't imagine you're too familiar
And I don't see you anymore
I wouldn't leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times
I'll take you just the way you are
You freaking moronic pigheaded idiots!

I think I have learned from some folks on PPOT.

I think there are a few conservative folks here that have made me consider my wild shoot from the hip liberal ideas a bit more closely.

I've had my mind changed a bit on certain things.

I now view Bill Clinton (as a President) as more moderate than I originally believed. Also that he was in many ways a fiscal conservative (more so than Bush).

Nathans_Dad 09-19-2008 06:38 PM

Believe it or not I have changed some of my ideas from debates on this forum. I am much more critical of Bush than I was a year ago. The handling of the Iraq reconstruction has been dismal.

I think any time you are exposed to a different view point that is articulated well, you must consider that view and examine your own view more closely. That's why I enjoy participating in some of the political threads. Unfortunately the threads with well articulated and honest discussions are few and far between.

Oh, I know.
More often than not, they're like mine.
But then, I'm an an admitted royal pain in the ass. :D

In response to the OP question - seldom does a PPOT discussion change my view immediately. But sometimes as I research the issue while writing posts during the debate I will learn things I didn't know and through that process my views change.

Unfortunately, most threads are pretty content-free - just people posting their opinion, without any supporting facts or analysis. I don't much care about anyone else's opinion on anything, so just reading those threads will seldom change my mind. Thus I have to participate pretty actively in a thread, to have my views influenced.

To be clear:
By "opinion" I mean a post like "well, I think blah blah".
By "facts" I mean "well, I think blah blah because of fact X and fact Y".
By "analysis" I mean "well, I think blah blah because facts X and Y imply Z and thus logically blah blah".

Oh, I assume you're asking about views on some important issue. If I'm asking for a good brand of blender or BBQ, then yes I care about all your opinions even if you don't add the facts and analysis etc.

"Wealth of Knowledge" ordained with pictures! Ha. Ha.

I can't say anything I've read here has changed any of my opinions; then again I'm never wrong, so what's to change?

I have learned alot about "Keyboard Warriors"
Like my friend Jake, I've learned that many people think differently than me
Some of the best Readers Digest versions of current events you can find

As with anything in life; anything in moderation ;)

Zef 09-21-2008 04:18 PM

Yup...change my mind and push me to put some ******* on the ignore list.

imcarthur 09-21-2008 04:36 PM

Change my mind? No.

Nearly pee myself laughing? Numerous times.

Feel disgust at the human race? Only a couple of times.
