I think dial up might blow this away. I have Directway Satellite Internet, when I first bought this house I was under the impression I could not get a land line for high speed. I had heard decent things about the satellite service so I decided to give it a try. In hindsight I wish I asked about it on PPOT.

I am contacting them about this lousy speed. I had to put in a 14 hour day here in NC on the laptop meeting some deadlines for a customer. I was using my e-mail and the internet a lot and it was so slow I was having miniture temper tantrums. When my Autocad decided to have an exception error and loose an hour worth of work I came unglued.


Anyone want to show me up with their dialup connection?

It could be that your dish needs to be re-peaked. Need to make sure that it's properly point right at the satellite. Also, crappy weather will likely hurt your connection, a lot, since it's probably Ku band. Satellite comms can't compete with wired comms these days. If there is any dsl or cable available now, then get it.

I know exactly what you mean, but those number are low for even DirectWay, you need to make sure your the dish is pointed correctly and your other hardware is operating correctly. Here are the numbers for my DirectWay connection.

Download Speed: 826 kbps (103.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 340 kbps (42.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

There is no other choice where I live, no DSL or cable availability. Even as much as I despise Cable Modem, I would get it, if it was available. Given the choice I would always choose DSL first.

There's an article in Newsweek (I think) about how the US lags far behind many other contries in connection speed. In the US, broadband is about 1-4Mbps, in other countries it's about 30-50Mbps. They blamed lack of competition here.

It is just not satellite. For some reason over the last week my download speed has dropped to 30kps. However when I do one of those internet speed checks it says my download speed is 164kps! I did several of the tests and they all say the same thing. But I have also done multiple downloads and believe me they are really slow! Sorry about the thread hijack!

It could very well be the server you are downloading from is the limitation and not your side. It's the sort of thing you look at all the data when the download is running to see everything, bandwidth utilization, etc.
