Great American Race

I had the pleasure this weekend of attending the Great American Race since it started here in my hometown of Concord NC. this year. I was only vaguely familiar with this event before this weekend. It looked like it would be a blast. There was a short wheel base long hood in it but I never got to talk to the driver/owner b/c he was never around his car. Anyone here by chance participated in one of these races?

I drove up and down on 29 on Saturday to try and find the start...

It was not very well advertised.... I eventually went back hope..

Shame.. I would have loved to see the start.

It was pretty cool. It started in downtown Concord on Union. They had a festival along with the start that then went on after the racers left. Some of the cars in this thing were so nicely restored.

I just check the web site and a 1967 Aston Martin DB6 is winning and it set a new race record. I saw this car when I was there it is very nicely restored.

I am kind of glad to see than an import is wining b/c they were not getting too much credit. I wish it had been the 911T thought. I have not been around too many early cars and as it roared past the start line I was surrprised at how much is sounded like my 83SC. There was a 356C there also that was in pretty good shape.

Years ago I lived in Norman, OK & the Great American Race made an overnight stop there (1995 or 1996?). It was great. All of the cars were parked downtown for everyone to see.

I got up very early the next morning (I remember it was still dark) to watch them leave from a local hotel. It was neat to see the variety of cars & to see the enthusiasm of the participants. I remember one couple was driving a white BMW 328 -- the old open car from the 1930s (I think), not the later 3-series car.

I see they are stopping overnight in Norman again. Sorry I will miss it.

Pre-WWII
BMW was founded by Karl Rapp originally as an engine manufacturer, Rapp Motor. Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH was founded as a successor company to Rapp Motor on July 21, 1917. [1] The Milbertshofen district of Munich was chosen, apparently because it was close to the Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenfabrik site. The blue-and-white roundel BMW logo, which is still used (illustrated above right) alludes to the white and blue checkered flag of Bavaria. It is often said to symbolize a spinning white propeller on a blue-sky background, although this interpretation developed after the logo was already in use. [1]

Not to get the thread too off-topic, but here is a photo of the BMW 328 I mentioned. It is a neat car -- I would like to drive one someday.

Wow I like that. Very antique but there is still something very modern about it....maybe it is just the paint color.

They came through town here a couple of years ago. The race is pretty neat and I think would be a blast to drive in.
