3.2 > boxster

on my way home from work/gym i get behind a nice looking debagged blue boxster.. not the new round headlight but the 996 look one, his plate says WHOOA so i figure heck lets see the whooa, i have an 86 3.2 with cage seats lowerd cup 2s etc, we hit the first turn and im all over his rear bumper, granted he had passenger but i had an unseatbelted cooler full of corona and ice, i say fair game, every turn that came made me glad i bought a 911 to say the least, and on the straights i thought he would at least pull me some there... nope anywho cars parked and the beer is in hand, cheers and if anyone knows him tell him good fun and maybe he wasnt pushing it?

I'm not real fond or this type of post/thread. What makes you think the guy wanted to race? A Boxster/3.2 in the hands of a good driver would eat you for lunch. You say "debagged" (it's de-badged, BTW), maybe you were hounding a 2.7. I have a 2.7 and it's not a rocket, but it handles very well.

Nice looking car you have there.

Did I say that I don't care for these type of posts? ;) :D

widgeon13 07-16-2007 12:18 PM

Maybe the guy was simply driving responsibly. I don't understand street racing or riding someone's bumper, if that's your thing do it on the track.

Deschodt 07-16-2007 12:32 PM

I agree... My base 2001 boxster was more than holding its own on track vs stock 3.2s, so I miagine an S would have had no problem.. Maybe he did not like someone riding his bumper ?

rtoms 07-16-2007 12:44 PM

we wernt racing dont get ur panties all in a bunch it was a spirited drive..

dshepp806 07-16-2007 01:25 PM

Yeah? Apparently he didn't seem as "spirited" as you,...or you would have experienced differently, the results? Bet your ass he wasn't pushing it...even with a passenger...

Getting on someone's ass,..oh great: here we go...smart thing to do......how about SIMPLY passing his ass then see what shakes? He'll let you know, you think?>

I recently had an encounter with a bad boy mustang out on my Sat.
7 A.M. run,..on the country backroads...funny......he wanted to do the same thing,...exhibiting the same rearview mirror activity (COMPLETELY ON MY ASS)..I was torn between pulling over and requesting he do the same...then apply a 2nd degree MBB style submission hold on his ass, ala' safety class......pissed me off. (Spirited? Bull****..completely UNSAFE)

I proceeded to dust his red ass off on multiple turns in my normally aspirated 3.2L '89 (begging the cops don't show) then to the straightaway.....I slowed down considerably on that straightaway, after easily clocking 146MPH...slowed down to 58 MPH, allowing him to pass, ..turbo and all (no compete with this straightline badass turbo.......) still he learned his lesson...and guess what he did when passing me? Hung me the bird!!! THEN i really get pissed....straightaway terminates into 5 different turns (2=really tight)...I'm on his ass so tight in the curves, he can't breathe,..NOT flikin' the bird, but throwing my hands up, asking: what else you got?
You're in my way....
What dick......I'm particularly pissed at my reaction to this jerk......Usually I have much more emotional control in these situations.....So,..I let myself down...knowing that should I be clocked at that speed,..my wife would be taking me to work for a year and mucho $$$$$...not to mention NO DRIVING THE P-CAR FOR A WHILE>>>>

freaked me out......live and learn......pissed me off, too. Wished he would of just stopped when he started this whole bull****,..we could of (easily) settled it there....

I learned,..I'm sure he did, too. Had he stopped for me, he would have most assuredly "learned"...prick...

sorry to ramble,...I'm with the others as to safety and "these type of """"spirited"""" engagements...........\,..irrespective of my actions in this situation....and for that I apologize.

...respect: ALWAYS

Tippy, Tippy, Tippy. You are such a good dog. If only you wouldn't cook with water from the toilet.

dshepp806 07-16-2007 02:18 PM

But the heat kills the germs (safe...) and and textures,....as a nice St. Emilion would....

(...all in jest, my friend...)

My best,

dshepp806 07-16-2007 02:22 PM

...and "tippy"...I'm in awe..

cliyde 07-16-2007 06:30 PM

Simply, a fact of life... that's the way I look at it. Everyone who sits there and pretends to frown on these topics, denying ever being pushed or enticed into "spirited driving" at some point is just FULL of it (unless of course, you and your p-car are consummate "garage queens").

Call it "street Racing", "stupid", "showing Off", or just "something to prove". We've all done it... GET OVER IT. This guy was just out having fun with another P-car owner. Obviously, the 'other' driver reciprocated by putting the hammer down. No harm, no foul. But YES I agree, the track is the proper place for it....

---------------------

Just the opposite story here. Cruising along the Interstate at a good rate of speed when I noticed a 2000'ish Boxster creeping up fast on my rear. Moved over to let him pass, but instead he's interested in playing. Hammers were dropped a few times and with in a few seconds or so it was over. I just remember thinking to myself - how sad Boxster "tear drop" headlights really look from a rear view mirror.

Nice car, rtoms!

turbo6bar 07-16-2007 06:44 PM

The boxter owner put in a long day at the hair salon and didn't want to run with you. Seems pretty obvious to me.

rtoms 07-16-2007 06:54 PM

bwhahah turbo6 thats spot on

The slowest 996 does ~175 top-end and 0-60 in ~5 seconds. That must be one fast RS clone. :)

speeder 07-16-2007 07:53 PM

I thought that I was going to be clicking on a thread about someone who put a 3.2 in a Boxster. Anyone else make that mistake?

masraum 07-16-2007 08:08 PM

He may have had another 20% in reserve, he may have been a more timid driver, he may not have been pushing hard out of courtesy to his passenger. I'd say that unless you've done major mods to your '86 (doesn't sound like it) that his car should be able to out-corner and out brake yours. His could have been a 2.5L or 2.7L in which case, you would have had a chance at out running him in a straight line (but it would have been close)

Those big heavy wheels that you are running look good, but actually hurt your handling (too heavy).

You never know, maybe he's a serious track junky or driving instructor and had another 30% in reserve that he didn't break out because he didn't want you driving off of a corner tail first behind him because you were trying to keep up, or maybe he's an old guy with no high speed driving experience and was able to do as well as he did because his car handles better than yours and he was scared spitless the whole time.

Maybe he is *****ing to his buddies about the guy in the old Porsche that ruined his drive today by hugging his azz.

THere's just no way to tell now, is there.

That's the kind of activity boxster-driving guys enjoy.

alf 07-16-2007 08:20 PM

I'd save it for the track.

Aerkuld 07-16-2007 08:35 PM

Just for the record, if anyone is ever sitting on my arse and then thinking that my car must be slow - I don't race. I get some sort of perverse pleasure letting people fly past and knowing that in 98% of cases if I wanted to keep them behind me I could. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a 'sprited drive', but two guys pushing each other to go faster and faster? It's not big and it's not clever, not on public roads.
Geez, I sound like my Dad.

CJFusco 07-16-2007 09:19 PM

stock 86 Carrera 3.2? Psssh, I could take you.

Actually, you're in CT... I probably have. ;)

Kidding... or am I?

HardDrive 07-16-2007 09:40 PM

Any of you aircooled nazis ever driven a 997 Boxster S wide the f*ck open?

I doubt it.

I'm curious, why?

Your post seems really aggressive, like anyone was saying that a 3.2L 911 could take a late model boxster S. I don't think anyone here mentioned that or thinks that, and if they do, then they are silly, naive, and/or uninformed.

I'm pretty sure that all of us (or at least most of us) would agree that the new boxsters (987, I think, 997 is the 911) and even the later model 986 models would wipe up a 3.2L Carrera. I'd say that the only boxsters that a stock 3.2L Carrera stands a chance against are the early boxsters with the 2.5 and 2.7, and even then, it only has a chance in a drag race. Even the early boxsters would probably spank a STOCK 3.2L car in the corners and braking.

I'm pretty sure that the OP said that it wasn't one of the newer boxsters, but was one of the older 986 style cars.

onewhippedpuppy 07-17-2007 06:10 AM

The thread poster is lucky, I would have given you a friendly brake check.:) Tailgating is probably my biggest driving pet peeve.

CJFusco 07-17-2007 06:15 AM

Yeah, I like a spirited drive as much as the next guy, but tailgating is one of the most annoying things anyone can ever do to me, ever. The worst is when the guy in FRONT of me is going slow, and I'm keeping a respectable distance but the kid in the Honda or the middle-aged guy in the ginormous pickup truck behind me rides MY azz.

techweenie 07-17-2007 06:22 AM

I usually get behavior like that from Civics and maybe a 3-series. When people come up and ride my bumper, I don't always feel the need to compete.

BTW, I've owned 4 3.2 Carreras and 2 Boxsters (2.5 and 2.7). I'd have been happy to race for 'pinks' in this situation, driving either of the Boxsters.

Remember: They may be pinks, but their money is still green.

Rot 911 07-17-2007 07:35 AM

Hell in a straight line my Jeep Grand Cherokee would have taken either the Carrera or the Boxster! :D But straight lines isn't what driving a Porsche is about. Any Porsche. I likes them all.

Porsche virgin 07-17-2007 07:36 AM

I thought the thread would discuss the merits of owning a 3.2 versus owning an early Boxster.

I was WAY off!

dshepp806 07-17-2007 11:41 AM

A Cherokee can pull over 145 MPH top side? No joke?

Better watch out for those bad arses, eh?

Yes,..those teardrop headlights do look "ikky",..to me, as well...

...I like the "frog look"...... ribbet>>>

Everyone be safe out there...spirited or not.

"We're only immortal for a limited time..."

Best to all of you....

BeerBurner 07-17-2007 12:08 PM

I miss the my old VW Scirocco's tail gun.

You see, the rear window washer was on a pylon on the passenger side of the hatch and would squirt across the rear window. I found out that at highway speed the washer fluid just got caught in the airstream, flipped up over the rear spoiler and all over the car behind me. :)

BB.

450knotOffice 07-17-2007 12:09 PM

Wayne, your clone will do sub 5 second 0-60 runs and then take it to 174?
(or, what's wrong with your 996?)

rtoms 07-17-2007 12:55 PM

you guys are nuts, i was driving normal we were on a fun road (244 in north east ct if ur local) he initiated the fun run, i let him try to pull on me then i goosed it, it wasnt like i was road rage on his bumper, i simply ment he wasnt pulling on me, heck maybe he wasnt pushin it hard but neither was i, and whoever said my wheels hurt handling is nuts, the car on stock 6 an 7 fuchs woud push all over the road...

dshepp806 07-17-2007 01:08 PM

BB: that's funny as hell!!!! Just get out front long enough to take a whizzzzzzz on 'em......then turn the stereo up to max, at a mere 30 MPH,..for 5 minutes or so,..laughing your arse off......listening to Red Barchetta by RUSH...

....so funny......

Best,

obligatory gold chains, faux rolex, "Members Only" jacket, plethora of Kenny G/Yanni CDs, and pectoral hair implants increase 996 power to weight ratio, causing significant reduction in performance. We haven't considered the ill effects of the dihydrogen oxide cooling medium.

OK, you had me lmao! Funny!

By the way, would that be dihydrogen MONO-oxide? ;)

I get irked because people are so quick to write off Boxsters, 944s, 928s.....anything that does not fit their narrow minded idea of what a 'real' Porsche looks like. Upon questioning them, they typically no nothing about the car, and 90% of the time have never driven one. 110% talking out of their tail sides.

The Cayman, the Cayanne, the up coming Panmera....grumble, grumble, pizz and moan....

Put a sock in it gramps.

Yeah, you're probably right. My "aircooled 4ever" flag is worn and tattered, much like my wit, so I am a poor <del>snob</del> spokesman. ;)

JeremyD 07-18-2007 05:27 AM

I'll agree with you harddrive - in the hands of a capable driver a boxster or better yet a boxster s will decimate a 3.2. Especially on a curvey road.

On the other hand - the 3.2 carreras have a more direct feel to the road.

I know at Sebring the stock boxsters give me a pretty good run - especially through the corners - but can't hang on the straights - the S can give me problems all over the track... and I have a few cough more HP...

JMatta 07-18-2007 05:57 AM

Sad eyes? Not my '02 S!
