SQL for Wayne
Does anybody have an extra, legitimate SQL license to give Wayne?
Pelican is getting slower and slower, to the point of being difficult to use. He mentioned that he was having an issue with the MySQL and that the Microsoft version could work better. I know he takes his time testing, (remember how long he was testing that posting button, like 3years! ;) ) but I am thinking that if the Pelicans can flock together we can help him out, get him the software and maybe even roll the db over! Maybe we could even help him update the vB software as well.... Am I dreaming? Could this be a pelican team thing? t. |
Microsoft SQL is slow.
|
That may be true, but something needs to be upgraded..
|
This BBS should be on DB2 for zOS.
|
there are lots of free (and Free) databases out there... since the forum is written in php, changing from mysql to postgres or similar should be easy..
Of course, the mysql would probably run better if it weren't on Windows... (one of the bsds or linux come to mind...) |

I am fairly sure a MS SQL db could handle the load here fairly easily...
The php stuff, I don't know. I was thinking of the vast resources that are on here and with the good sense of community we seem to have we could tweak this. Right now its Pelican Parts. Let's make it Pelican Turbo Parts... We can poll for the most desired features, etc.... |

Whoo hoo, Harddrive is from Seattle. I'm terribly sorry to say anything against the glorious Microsoft. I was, in my naivety, going to say Oracle SQL is a good product.
|
When you do goto vb3 and still need some help, I'm pretty good friends with the guy that handles the SQL aspect of vbulletin. :)

Oracle is indeed a good product. |
FYI, all this talk of "this is better than this" is very subjective.
I can show you test-cases that will make any database look better than any other database. I own a company that does high-end database design and distributed performance tuning (largest on-line banking systems in the US and Canada, government, IRS, etc), and it's all about the right tool for the right job, and the proper implementation with the right tool. If the code is ****, it doesn't matter what DB you're using. But yes, certain features are better implemented in some databases than others. It's a matter of figuring out what you need and picking the right tool. MySQL has it's good points, and it's bad points. It's probably the fastest read-only DB on the planet, other than a custom-built DB, but it suffers in other areas. Of course, I'm a huge Oracle fanboy, but that's a whole other topic. |

ps: Just because your toobox contains DB2 (a "hammer"), doesn't mean this BBS is a "nail" :) |
No, really serious....
 |
Surely you knew I was kidding.
zOS is more like using a pile driver on a push-pin. Maybe a move up to a mid-grade server? (Do they still make the AS400?) |

AS400 is now I-Series.
Same OS400 / Same DB400 Work with Active Jobs? |
open systems= cheap
they are great for what this bbs needs. wayne, do you have a turbo button on the server you can push. (remember how the 486's had those?!) hey, maybe its time to go water cooled? porsche did it, maybe the bbs should to. |
Have to disagree on that one, MySQL is (at least) as good as MS SQL, specially for large volume transactions and storage, the algorithms behind the reindex are far superior.
What version of MySQL have you installed? if a db is corrupted does not matter if is MySQL od DB2 on zOS .. first thing is to fix the corruption, think about using MySQL Cluster or to provide some kind of fault tolerance to the db (easily done at the OS level) Quote:

Sounds like Wayne is onto something, but I agree that this "smells" more like a corrupted db, etc. than a MySQL architecture issue, based upon my own "end user" experiences. Any issues with MySQL (assuming it hasn't been upgraded/modied lately) would have been there since the git-go, and this performance degradation happened almost "over night" a few weeks back. I know we're probably not helping you Wayne, but it gives us something to chat about instead of politics :)!
|
Ya know, I was going to say this seemed to happen really fast. not a gradual thing at all.
IIRC it started a little over 4 weeks ago. at least for me. |

WRKACTJOB? The commands are just a bunch of TLA's... :) |
I agree, this forum has come to a crawl, it was like someone left the e-brake on.
As of a few weeks ago it got real slow. |
Wayne,
The SQLServer licenses $$$ is not too bad, what's going to be expensive is the internet access. Everytime a database serves out the internet it requires some special licensing from Oracle or Microsoft, their argument is that you can't control how many users will benefit from using the database server (and going with a single application connection argument doesn't fly) If your database is less than 2GB of space you qualify for the MSDE Edition or Oracle Express Ed. These versions are fully featured they're only restricted to the size and number of CPU. (please check the fine print and details for each one) I'm a DBA so I offer you my help, let me know.. Bye Jasper |
Anyone else think this started just after the thread telling people how to make their browsers faster by opening multiple connections?
|
I did point that out a few days ago (it might have been on another thread). It may or may not be critical, but it's a good suggestion as many times poor performance is a combination of factors.
