Inline switch for DC ?

Moderator...please remove duplicate post that didn't work...

==========================================

Is there such a thing available like an "inline" electrical switch for DC circuits ?....it would be something like this inline fuse holder------->

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103778&cp=2032058.2032234.203 2302&parentPage=family

.....but instead of a fuse holder there would be a rocker switch in its place. See these all the time for AC ( lamp cord switches), but this would be single wire for DC.

Most ALL switches are "in-line". Single pole, single throw. AC/DC doesnt matter. How much load you need it to carry does.
Example of what you're trying to do?

I'm talking about a switch with pigtails on both ends and you then add spade connectors ...just like the link that I'm sure you looked at...only not a "fuse holder" but a switch.... want to install in a trunk lighting circuit but that shouldn't matter "where"...12VDC less than 5A....

Computer case switch, etc.

Or do you want a plunger setup so teh light comes on when the trunk is open?

None of these are what you're looking for?

Are you guys kiddin' me ....??

Really... I mean no disrespect but did anyone actually read my original question? ...and *look* at the link I posted along with the question ???.

I'm looking for a device that has pigtails on both ends and otherwise looks like an INLINE fuse holder ( you know...sitting there IN SPACE).....only it's a switch instead of a fuse holder. Along the lines of an in-line table-lamp switch...the one "on the cord" like a thumbwheel or rocker....

Ya must have seen these in parallel-wire AC service....

Alhough I apprecite responses...I can find *panel-mounted* switches all day long !!!

Use a thumbwheel lamp switch then.
Still not sure what your application is....

Old type plunger alarm switch?

I really don't know what the *application* has to do with the question/answer...but since you asked....

I often keep the trunk lid open. I also don't want the light to come on when the trunk lid is open for extended periods ( work in the trunk area, etc). I separated the male/female spade connectors that feed the light so that the light will be "OFF" when wanted during these times. It is dangersous to keep the male / female spades disconnected since ( in Porsche's wisdom) the male spade is always "hot" and can touch the body metal if you should close the lid when in this condition.

So...because there is no separate "on/off" light switch on the body of the light itself ( of course there is a plunger switch that normally activates the light when lifting the lid, but there's no separate light switch to allow the light to be "off" when the lid is open)...we can insert an inline switch BETWEEN the original two male/female connectors and either leave the switch "on" ( in which case the plunger switch on the car works as normal) or we can leave the in-line switch "off" ( in which case the plunger switch leaves the light "off" even when the lid is lifted).

So...much like an *inline fuse* with pigtails on each end ( to which you attach the appropriate matching male/female connectors)...I'm looking for an "inline switch", like is so often used in lampcords for AC table lamps. Of course, the AC switch has two leads "in" and two leads "out" from the (typically) rotary thumb screw switch...but I only need one in/one out for the 12VDC circuit.

OK...now that you know the application...let's see these switches...can't find any like this.

I might just end up inserting an inline fuse holder and I'll pull the actual fuse to act as a switch in the "off" position...but a switch is more elegant as a solution.

OK?

Update:

Ya know...the dialogue forced here made me think of a better solution. I'll run the separated ( male/female) connectors to a normal rocker switch that I'll install in the fiberboard "backwall" of the trunk. Then it will be like the classic panel-mounted switches suggested here earlier afterall....

Use a lamp rotary switch "in-line". Solder the wires to the contact points and button it up. Hide it if you wish.
More than enough current-carrying capability for that light bulb.
Plus you can get them in colors. :)

don't see anything exactly like what you are looking for on their site. but it sounds like all you need is something like a connector?

did you look at any of these?
http://www.radioshack.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2032284&cp=2032058.2032231

of course a spade connector would work too.

if you want the correct answer you need to ask the correct question. knowing the application of your question is best way for us to give you the answer you are looking for.

since you cant find the exact answer on the web. get off the computer and get your butt down to your local radio shack or full service hardware store and ask someone in the electrical dept.

Sugestion...read the first post and tell me what's missing ?????? And how much did my extra few hundred words do to find the answer ?

Instead of messing with the wiring, why not rig a method of holding the plunger down?

Oh, and what's with the attitude? People are trying to help you, show a little gratitude. I thought you were kidding at first....

Wil Ferch 07-19-2007 02:21 PM

A plunger hold-down device or a normal switch on the backboard seem the better answers...might still simply use modded AC switch as it changes nothing permantly to the car, it's only an added harness that can be removed.

OK then..over and out

well by knowing the application we have a better idea of what you are looking for and how to solve your problem.

your original question was vague on what you really needed to do, but turns out you were asking the right question just didn't know it at the time. we just wanted to make sure we had the question right.

if you had looked thru the whole radio shack site earlier, you would have found what it sounds like you needed in the first place, and is exactly like some of the first suggestions we gave you. so yes the extra info was helpfully and needed to get you to the solution.

glad we could be of some help on making your decision:rolleyes:

Ted:

I don't want to continue this.....

My questions were clear...the point you're missing is that I didn't ask for alternate solutions... I asked about the availability of a particular style of part. Your posted links showing spade connectors and the like... did not help find such a part. I also don't need to be told to get off my butt when all I'm doing is asking a specific question on this board.

Please give it a rest......

Regards,
- Wil
