Got it...I only taped "taper friendly" bands, so I never had any issues...(I would never "bootleg" anyone).

Yes it WAS a blast, even though eventually it landed me in AA. I saw the likes of Springsteen at 500 seat clubs, Fleetwood Mac pre-Buckingham Nicks. Little Feet at college venues, Dead Boys, Sex Pistols, Pretenders, Dire Straits,Tom Petty, David Sanborn, the list goes on and on. Of course I have horror stories about having to work with Diana Ross and Frank Sinatra too.

Nostril Cheese 07-20-2007 07:14 AM

Saw No Doubt play in a backyard once.

Gonna date myself...Saw Jimmy Buffett playing for tips in a bar in Key West. Shared a fatty with him.

Allman Brothers at a local outdoor festival on St Simon's Island.

This may not really qualify, but before Tony Bennett's resurgence in the mid '80's, he played at a small town arts festival. I actually drove him 200 miles to Memphis to catch a flight after the show. He was truly a nice guy...very modest. He politely asked if I would mind if he put on headphones to rehearse a few numbers. So for over an hour I drove along while he sang acapello.

craigster59 07-20-2007 08:55 AM

Saw Van Halen at a small club in '77. Motley Crue at the Roxy in '81.

When I first saw KISS they were the first band (warm-up band) of three to play at the modelst JFK Pavilion at Gonzaga University. The other two bands were Savoy Brown and Manfred Mann. Some time after the KISS performance I saw a tall ugly guy in ridiculous high platform shoes come out of the backstage door with a gorgeous blonde on his arm. I am pretty darned sure that was Gene Simmons without his makeup.

Went to high school with Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, real jerk.

Like Brian Wilson I never got out much.

I was at a party and a couple of guys said "there is this new guy playing at the whiskey, lets go see him" so we left and saw Tom Petty and the heatbreakers... where is he from?

Around 1974-75, we used to attend these Friday night tapings of Rock Concert as often as possible. Almost any major band of the era was there and a few new ones too. No lip-syncing here, all live.........

Hey, Hey! I may be older but I'm not all THAT gray:D

I was maybe 16 or 17 and I was with a friend in Huntington Beach, CA. Must have been about 1970-1972 ish...anyway, we walked into the Golden Bear (a small club - it was the middle of the day and they would usually be closed but the door was propped open). He went in to ask for some directions to a surf shop he was looking for and Linda Ronstadt was practicing. They hustled us out but we stood outside and listened a bit. The band was just noodling around and I don't think I really knew who she was then. But she was VERY cute and thin in those days. Today? Well, kind looks like your mother! DOH! Oh well, good to know I didn't get any older;)

Ok I'm gonna date myself, but I saw The Who as an opening act for ....Hermans Hermits! The Blues Magoos were also on the bill as the opening , opening act. Saw Zep in a tent theatre in Cleveland on their first tour of the USA.

Saw Lynyrd Skynyrd when they were the warm up for Marshall Tucker at Chico State in the spring of '74. Pretty much tore the place down with all the energy. Opened with Gimme Three Steps, closed with about 45 min of Freebird. Those were the days.

Linda Ronstadts backing band in the early 70's was the Eagles. Can you remember if it was them behind her?

I lent our PA to The Cranberries a few times, back when they were called 'The Cranberry Saw Us'

That is one hell of a story! If you do not already have it in your
collection, pick up a copy of the Bill Evans / Tony Bennett CD.

Nelson - AKA, the Nelson twins.
When I was taking guitar lessons, Incubus was not quite a band yet, but they took lessons from the same store and we passed each other all the time. Too bad I didn't answer there fliers on the walls.

These are some great stories!

I will throw mine in that I will never forget.

This may not count as he was well famous by then but I moved to LA from North Carolina in 79. The first few weeks I was there I would sometimes ride around evenings and stop at any place that looked interesting. I stopped at a bar on, I believe, Santa Monica Blvd. at around 10PM. The only people in the place were the bartender, a guy playing nonstop melodies at the piano and two girls taking turns singing.

I had a beer and was enjoying the singing. During my second beer I ask the bartender who the one girl was that was singing and he said he did not know her name. Later I asked who the other girl was and he said “You actually don’t know who that is do you” and I said no. (OK, I’m a hayseed from NC) He said “that’s Stevie Wonder playing and the one girl is his sister and the other, I think, is his girl friend and today is his birthday”.

I asked the bartender if it was ok if I stayed and he said stay as long as you want. I sat at the bar for a couple of hours with no one in the place enjoying the music and occasionally talking to the bartender. He never stopped playing even between songs he would keep a melody going while talking to the two girls. He got up once to go to the toilet, led by one of the girls, came back and continued playing.

When I left he was still playing and the girls taking turns singing – he never sang. I sat there wishing my girlfriend or someone was with me to take it all in. I am sure he did not know anyone was watching as I never got the glance of “what are you doing in here” from the girls. He was very relaxed and enjoying himself.

Also saw Roberta Flack several times at a bar she played regularly in Georgetown (Washington DC) in the 60’s before she took off.

Since were on the topic of bands, does anybody remember a band called Morningstar from the late 70's early 80's?

I caught Live at the gymnasium of Brandeis College in MA in like '94 or '95. A few months later they were doing arena concerts. Great show, fantastic energy.
