Where to go on honeymoon

I know Ive been stuck at home all day posting threads. Well less than a month to go and still haven't made my mind up yet. I don't want to spend a whole lot but don't want to come off as cheap. I'm thinking less than 5k and no I'm not going to take my new bride to hedonism or anything along those lines. She wants a surprise so I'm looking for someplace with a lot of wow without all the $$. Vegas is out of the question too. Too much bad stuff there.

BeerBurner 07-22-2007 01:39 PM

I wish I could help you, but I'll be taking my honeymoon in June and we still haven't figured out where we'll be going! :(

Congrats, tho. :)

LOL I'm going to be in that boat if don't think of something. I asked my sister who is friends with jennifer (thats how we met). Sis basically told me I was my own on this one. Seems she doesn't want the liability of making a bad suggestion.

What do you mean Cold? Beriut offers some really great deals on Hotels and is on the Sunny Mediterian...a real club Med with plenty of action and thrills for those with a budget in mind. let Hezzabola be your guide.

I would go to Europe. A little hint: Brussels is the cheapest city in Europe, and has plenty of things to do and see. Belgians are gormands- they live for good food and as such demand it from their restaurants. The best beer and the best chocolate come from Belgium. Unless you eat at the local McDonalds, you are sure to gain kilograms in this city. Flights in to this place are usually cheap since the airlines use yield-management programs to control their prices, and Brussels is just slightly off the typical beaten path= lower prices for you. Also, you can easily take a train to Paris (90 minutes and $50) or any city in Europe from the train station in the airport.

A plus: Since it is the seat of the European government, nearly everyone there speaks English. You'd have way more difficulty speaking English in some sections of Miami or Honolulu than you will in Brussels.

Well, let me know what you do. It seems that I need some ideas. :p

Regarding Beirut, my brother's wife is from there and he's visited Lebanon several times. I hear it's a beautiful place to go and would love to go there sometime. Maybe after things stabilize a bit, tho...

Tabs are currently going trough some kind of major mental breakdown?

I'm getting married in Vegas in Oct. and will probably drive to LA, spend a few days there and then up the coast to Napa and Sonoma for a few days, fly home from SF or San Jose.

FWIW, I think Brussels is the most overrated place in Europe. So many better places nearby.

Well does Beriut meet your criteria as listed above. You sure don't have to worry about hedonism in a Muslim country and there is a lot of WOW happening in country all to be had at bargain prices.

svandamme 07-22-2007 03:39 PM

i'm from Belgium and i would recommend against Brussels, at least not for a dedicated honeymoon

you'de be better off in Bruge ,

http://www.mintha.com/2000-01/images/bruge4.jpg

http://www.cs.uiowa.edu/~cwyman/pers...Minewater2.jpg

and venture out from there to visit some places like Ghent(medieval fortress town,

with dungeon and torture chamber , very romantic

Ypres(ww1, my home town i'm moving back there in august)

could venture over the border into North of France, Dunkirk,
Eperleques Blockhouse(massive V1-V2 bunkers, walls as thick as 18 feet, a Tall boy bomb could not penetrate the roof

't would not be a typical honeymoon in the sense of "Venice", "hawai" or "paris"

but i'm sure it would be an interesting trip, sightseeing, bit of WW1 history, bit of Middle Age stuff, a variety of things really

Brussels is a bit boring imho...

Now here is the payoff

And the best part of a Honeymoon in Beriut is that it will probably be the last quiet interlude after your married. You might say it will prepare you for what is coming after being married.

Maybe but Im marrying a good corn-fed Midwest girl. Not a west coast high maintenance chic. Although she did latch on to my new Motorola Q.

Tim Walsh 07-22-2007 04:14 PM

My Wife and I just got back from Estes Park, CO, which is just outside the rocky mountain national park. We both had a blast all week and didn't spend anywhere near your limit. If you're at all outdoor people it's a good idea to check out. Just $20 to get into the park all week allows you some spectacular views and hikes, while there's great food in town and plenty of activities to do spur of the moment as well.

Edit: This was our honeymoon as well.

Jamie79SC 07-22-2007 05:10 PM

It's not too late to back out.

LOL If theres gonna be any backing out it would be on her part. Ive found the girl of my dreams. Took jennifer to meet dad (lives in Florida). Hes never complimented me on anything not my cars or in sports even when I landed a good job. But he told that jennifer is a beautiful woman. I'm content.

tonypeoni 07-22-2007 05:22 PM

Anyways thanks for the suggestions Ill look into Europe.

Wickd89 07-22-2007 07:33 PM

rent a villa in the Como lake district of Italy or Lugano Lake of Switzerland. Great for shopping, natural beauty, etc...

Food is great tooo. Use to work in the area and really nice...

Don Plumley 07-22-2007 08:38 PM

If you are going to go to Europe (or anywhere that's not a destination resort), I agree with Luis - rent an apartment or villa in one location and use that as a jumping off point. There are many beautiful areas in Europe to go, it really depends on what floats your boat. Italy, South of France, Paris, Austria, Portugal, Barcelona, so many nice places to go!

Aerkuld 07-23-2007 04:38 AM

I know a Jennifer from the mid-west, but I know it's not the same one as I'd have recognized her photo...

RoninLB 07-23-2007 04:42 AM

Kenya

Hang w/an English crowd, travel package tours 5 exotic sanctuaries, and relatively inexpensive if you shop it. She'll be talking about it forever.

There are others in Africa so look up migration seasons.

another idea is to look up Tauck Tours.

So it's not Europe, but my wife loved the cruise we took. We went to Cozumel and Calica, 5 day, and it was something like $1200 (Carnival). Includes all food and drinks, except alcohol. They have a huge variety of shore excursions (diving, scuba, horseback riding, etc), so you can mix things up. Plus, there's just something insanely relaxing about sitting on the deck of the boat, looking around, and not seeing a damn thing. We had a great time, and will go again.

Plus, you can go just about anywhere. Next one we take will be Alaska, which is supposed to be incredible.

Aerkuld 07-23-2007 05:07 AM

I'll try being helpful.
Have you thought about Madeira? Very nice little island out in the North Atlantic. Nice and warm, a little bit of everything, very relaxing. Have a look at this...

The Amalfi Coast - Italy. Positano, Amalfi, Ravello. Most beautiful place I've ever been.

good food, very friendly folks
not to sunny though, mostly gray overcast,(you do get a tan, albeit not a scorching flashburn like in Gran Canaria) except on the south tip of the island where there is more sun.. temp's are usually 24-28 C degrees, little variation between day or night
Very Very humid

it's not a touristic island in the sense of package tourisme and loads of young folks, in fact when i was there, most hotels were retired folks, in big hotels on the coast, very little touristic nightlife, i think that's a plus

when i was there, i was visiting a girl from my hometown who went there as a dancer, was dancing in a show for all the hotels... best holiday i ever had :D

id10t 07-23-2007 05:23 AM

Wife and I really enjoyed a cruise from Vancouver up the Alaska coastline....

Maybe a quick tour thru Europe somewhere, say England and France?

JavaBrewer 07-23-2007 05:33 AM

$5K is not going very far in Europe. It's really expensive. Two coffee and some sort of pastry = ~ $20. The bigger cities even more.

Europe is great - if you're up for it. After our wedding we were both exhausted. If I could do our honeymoon over (England, Holland, Austria over 10 days) I would go for a resort on a beach where all you do is have sex, eat good food, lay on the beach, play in the water, have more sex, dance, and then eventually sleep :)

The wife and I recently had an amazing time in Puerto Vallarta at a Marriott resort. Infinity edge pool on the beach, multiple food choices, no stress, and mostly peaceful and relaxing. Your $5K will go far there.

Good luck to you and your future bride.

Rick Lee 07-23-2007 05:43 AM

Europe can be done cheaply if you know how to do it. I've rarely spent more than $1000 in any of my three week trips there and that included renting a car and driving a lot. Of course, I have never stayed in a hotel in Germany or Austria, since I have a lot of friends there. But $5k should easily be enough if you're not throwing money away, taking the most expensive trains, flying first class and staying at the expenive hotels. Your money goes way farther in eastern Europe than in the west and I think eastern Europe has far more character.

In the early 90's I hitchiked from Luxembourg to Kiev and spent about $300 in three weeks. You couldn't get that great of an adventure for $10k.

what was the exchange rate , the times you came over???
currently, it's a biotch for you guys
these days it's more fun to spend money earned in Euro's, over in the US...

Rick Lee 07-23-2007 05:53 AM

Oh, I know the exchange rate sucks. But adventure travel can be done cheaply anywhere if you really know how to stretch your money.

If you want real adventure for very cheap, go to China. Best bang for the buck, you'll live and eat like royalty and never ever be bored or think you've seen enough.

jkarolyi 07-23-2007 06:27 AM

Something doesn't add up...in another thread you talk about getting a 308 and talk about your 512 boxer, and here you are trying to cheap out on your honeymoon?

Some advice...think about spending more on your honeymoon than on a maintenance check on your Ferrari.

In any case, we just did 10 days in Fiji for about 5 grand and we stayed and dined pretty well. Air New Zealand and Air Pacific have amazingly cheap fares right now.

Tishabet 07-23-2007 08:17 AM

I got back about a month ago from a 2 week honeymoon in Thailand, you could definitely do it on this budget. We spent around $6k total.
Round trip airfare from JFK to Bangkok was around $1200/person including taxes etc
Very good lodging in the cities (I'd recommend Chiang Mai highly) can be had for less than $50/night. Our honeymoon suite in Chiang Mai was $67/night including excellent breakfast.
Good meal including drinks will start around $10-15 at a nice restaurant
Car and driver for a day will run around $30-$40
2 hour Thai massage will cost you around $15-$20
Liter of Singha beer will cost you around $1
We had an absolute blast... Spent time in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Kho Samui, and Kho Tao.

I hear Kabul is wonderfull in the Fall. Have the Special Forces guyz take you up to the Pakistani Boarder and pop off a few Taliban/Al Qaeda types on the other side with a 50 Barrett. That ought to be a memorable Honeymoon, and you will be doing your bit in the War on Terror as well.

I've done the same in the '80s and '90s. Youth hostels, pensions, Eurail pass, etc...3 weeks for $1500 and it was a blast. However, that's not the sort of trip I think most folks have in mind for a honeymoon. We went through $7.5K over 10 days in UK & Europe. Airfare, rental car, toll roads (one route cost $75), gas, food, hotels, sights, attraction entrance fees, misc small items. Most nights we stayed in medium/low class hotels, only one night of *fine* dining, and very little shopping. Hell it even costs money to use a public restroom. It's mind boggling how fast the money goes unless you really concentrate and work to go cheap. But that's not my idea for a great honeymoon.

creaturecat 07-23-2007 02:49 PM

Paris - maybe 3-4 days
Hi speed train to the south of France
Avignon - rent a car.
Explore the region for 3 days.
Back to Paris.
5000 would cover this quite easily - as long as the "fine dining" is
kept to a minimum.

kang 07-23-2007 03:35 PM

Am I really the first one to suggest going to the bedroom?
