Whats your opinion of the Ferrari 308

Well a particularly nice model with 15k and a 2 owner history is being offered in my area. Ive always dreamed of this car since I was a small child watching magnum P.I. Maybe its all those years of staying glued to the T.V. every Friday night watching Tom Selleck drive around Hawaii picking beautiful women up.

I know the 308 is not a hotrod at 250 hp. But it has something that the 930, 512 and really any super car of its time lacked. Kinda a beautiful feminine quality that hasn't been seen since.

They are beautiful cars. The early carbed hard tops are my favorites. That maintenance........yikes.

I think he means 15K miles, Wayne.

That write up/ad you did for your own car was pretty fantastic, and informative. Is it still around?

LOL yes 15,000 miles. If it was $15,000 it would be in my garage.

So, you consider yourself a "Porsche guy" more than a "Ferrari guy", Wayne?

Did you bring up on the Ferrari boards how much more affordable Porsches are for similar (if not better) performance? I bet they LOVED that

The 1978-79 cars are the best in my opinion, as they are the last of the carbureted cars. With 240 *peak* HP, they are somewhat underpowered for the weight of the chassis (well over 3000 lbs). They also have cams that are designed for autobahn driving - not too much low-end torque. Porsche 911s make way better daily drivers.

$15K is super cheap for one of these cars, as long as it's not a 1980-82 model. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for - I recommend the same principles for buying Porsches - don't buy the cheapest one on the block ,because it will cost you more in parts to repair. This goes quadruple for Ferraris - parts are hard to find, and expensive when you can find them. And when I mean expensive, I mean *EXPENSIVE*. Exhaust gaskets that are $38 a piece, and you need eight of them. Distributor caps are $250 and you need two of them. Things like door stays, and inside door lamps are unavailable and big bucks on the used market. A set of bushings for the entire car will run $1600. Forget about it if you don't do your own maintenance yourself - Ferrari mechanics charge the most for jobs than I have ever seen. The 308 belt replacement is not that difficult, but no Ferrari mechanic that my the new owner of my car has found will touch it for less than $4500. All it needs is the belts changed - no bearings or anything else. Sorry, $4500. What a screw. I've gotten into trouble on the Ferrari boards, when I've tried to rail against these rediculous tactics used by Ferrari mechanics. It's the "replace it while you're in there, because I'm going to frighten you into doing it by saying your engine is going to blow up if you don't".

I could go on for hours...

Bottomline, a there is no such thing as a FREE Porsche, and there is no such thing as a cheap Ferrari.

-Wayne
So basically the same maintenance as my 512. Thats understandable after all its Italian. But $4500 for a timing belt? I take it the engine must come out. The only thing that really scares me about the car I looked at and drove is the fact that the transmission has not had any kind of service. I know from the 512 that was a $8000 rebuild.

Depends on the Porsche. My 930 cost almost $13,000 dollars in engine and transmission work. I think in truth barring a 308s transmission a 930 and a 308 are about the same running cost.

Nothing useful to add here other than I have a soft spot for the 308 and it's one of the cars that's in my "dream garage".

I'm on a LOW BUDGET..a cut price person in low budget land. Used to smoke cigars but now just suck Polo Mints. I just had to learn to economize. I'm shopping at Walmart and low discount stores. I've dropped my standards so I can buy more. My shoes don't quiet fit, but they were a special offer so they hurt me a bit. My trousers are giving me a pain, but they were reduced so I shouldn't complain. They squeeze so tight that I can't take anymore. They are size 38 but I take size 44. I may look like a tramp but don't write me off. At least all my hair is all mine and my teeth are my own, but everything else is on permanent loan. Once all my cloths were made by hand but now I am a cut price person in Low Budget land.

How about a Lancia Stratos Replica with a Guy Croft Fiat powerplant ?

Tell me again why the 8 valve FI motor doesn't cut it ? I would think it would be a natural for big valve heads and advancing the intake cams about 4 deg.

In truth, the best way to buy one is right after a major service. The best time to sell one is just before it's due for service.

For some reason I like the Berlinettas with all of the black vents on the hood best.

Funny, I prefer the look of a 512 over a 308. Wish I had the choice!

FWIW I live in a "one horse" town... as in ONE Ferrari. The guy lives nearby, and I see him every week or two on nice days.

On Saturday, I was doing the water pump on my Jetta and had to go to get some parts. He pulled up in the parking lot in his 308. I ran over (literally) to catch him, and asked if he'd humor me for 2-3 minutes and show me his car.

Turns out he does almost ALL the work himself. He's had the engine out TWICE since he bought it 3-4 years ago. I was surprised to hear that the engine & tranny came out from above, instead of being dropped down like most rear or mid engined cars. He says it's actually enjoyable to work on, if a bit complicated. Most parts prices are atrocious, but many of the Bosch components are common with VW & others.

We talked for almost 30 minutes. Him in his Ferrari regalia, me in my "project mode" clothes, torn greasy shorts and work boots. I am pretty unabashed about asking people to show me their cars... car nuts are almost always glad to have someone compliment and show interest in their rides.

Many of the four seater Ferraris of that era were "bastardized" because they didn't command much of a price -- they became GTO replicas, or whatever this thing is supposed to be. One version had particularly unfortunate-looking slanted quad headlights.
