Weird thing happened while on my cell phone

Most evenings, I parallel park my car on a fairly busy street, while I rollerblade around a local park. This past evening, I was leaving a voicemail for my dad and was almost ready to hang up, when a truck (like a moving van) slowed down next to me while I was standing by my car. The brakes squealed and all of a sudden, I heard a voice on the cell saying "your message has been deleted...", WTF?!? It was just like phone phreaking on a pay phone. The truck matched the tone that tells the computer to discard the message! Although it was annoying, it was also neat how a truck could cause a server somewhere to delete a message.

That seemingly 'normal' truck was probably filled with equipment and members of the (pick one)
NSC, FBI, CIA, or________? You are lucky you do not have a pacemaker! They drive around in urban areas in such trucks, emitting death rays (trying to reduce the load on Social Security).

What? I can't start another conspiracy thread...(sigh) OK.

Carry on.

Slodave,

Thats highly unlikely that the truck breaks emitted a sound at the exact frequency required to cancel your message. This was a coincidence. The phone doesn't operate on sound frequency anyway. The tones are generated as a response to a command, not the command. I think its more plausible that the truck was hauling big brother and he ECM'd (Jammed) you, than the squeal having any effect at all.

MY .01 cents

Bob

Ok...it IS working!:)

CJFusco 08-03-2007 06:10 AM

Yeah, I don't think cell phones operate on sound frequencies the same way that land lines do... but I could be wrong...

Been nice knowing you, Dave. Hey, if you happen to mysteriously disappear next week, can I have the 911?

KevinP73 08-03-2007 07:10 AM

"Phone Phreaking"!! there's a term I haven't heard in ages. Maybe you know my brother in law Capt Crunch (not to be confused with Pelican member by the same name)?

I was in my SC on the track behind a 994 turbo once when I swear his and my exhaust notes were out of phase for a few seconds and all I could hear were our tires on the track.

EX BIL....... He was very clever about some things and totally clueless when it came to "common sense" things. Good guy nonetheless.

Gotta love those old whistles. :D

I suppose it could have been a coincidence, but maybe not. I guess the only way to find out, is to record the tone from the cell phone and play it back over some speakers. Then, try and synthesize the tone and see if it works. Maybe Mythbusters wants to get in on this ;)

Kevin: I remember the name.

Noah: No, the 911 stays with me, it's in the contract - "Dave must disappear with his Porsche 911 Targa".

Dave

Do a google search for "John T Draper or "Capt. Crunch". It's good reading for those who don't allways follow the dotted line.

Here's a a link to one of his websites. Cool info on what he did.
