BMW 1 Series - your thoughts/opinions
The BMW 1 series is almost here in The States. To me, it looks very much like the 2002, which is one of my favorite cars. I haven't seen a price yet, but goodness knows it has all the power (300 hp) and possibly handling prowess anyone would need. Hmmm...the perfect remedy for that aging 911? Perhaps.
![]() Anyway, here's some photos. What do you guys think? ![]() ![]() ![]() Oops - I wanted to put this in OT. Sorry guys. Mods, please move if so desired.

![]() I'll take the original BMW "1" series, thank you. Can't wait to see all the high-school girls driving the other "one"... |

It's a PIG of a car for its size, not a whole lot lighter than the 3-series.
Still, I'll probably trade my MINI in on one after they work the bugs out in a couple years.

I think Bangle forces people to immediately decide if they like his 'styling' or not.
Also makes me think of the saying; 'Just because no one understands you, doesn't mean your an artist.'

Lots of people seem to understand Bangle's styling.
It in fact has influenced countless cars on the road today. Bangle has turned out to be the most influential designer of the past 40 years. |

On the 1 series, will have to wait to see it in person. Definitely love the interior, though. Modern, yet it really harkens back to the simple and functional BMW interiors of the 70s and 80s.
I think it will be a great car, and a big hit among enthusiasts. Size wise, I'm sure it will be as large as the 3 series from not too many generations back. The Turbo 6 that will come in the top version is rated at 300 hp, but independent testing has shown that number to be understated by 10% or so. And with a Vishnu re-flash, it puts out an easy 400/400. In a car that size, that is going to be a hoot. Hopefully they aren't too hot right out of the box and depreciate like a normal modern car. I would love to pick up a 2-3 year old one for cheap. If they use the M1 name for the M version, though, that would be unfortunate. |

I thought Bangle was done with BMW, or rather, BMW was done with Bangle. I read somewhere that the latest 3-series was the first post Bangle car for the company. If he's gone, it's with good reason. The current 5-series is hideous.
At any rate, sure, the M1 was iconic. But keep in mind over 25 yrs. later, this 1 Series coupe has 33 more horsepower than the stock M1, "might" handle and brake better with newer materials (brakes, tires), and as far as "high school girls" driving the 1 Series, so what? I've seen high school girls driving M3s. Wicked high school girls drive the 2002 Tii. ![]()

Bangle was promoted within BMW - no longer responsible for design...

I'd love to be able to get the 1 series hatch with a diesel for a daily driver. Transport Canada shows one every year at the Canadian International Auto Show to tease everyone, but still nothing official yet.

2002?
That was simple, classic design. This is busy for the sake of being busy. Put me on the no thanks list.

If that looks a 2002 to you, you need to have your eyes checked. The one series is fugly. No one ever said that about the 2002.

Plenty have called the 2002 ugly. Nonetheless, your broad, sweeping statement(s) about eyesight vs. design vs. the entire planet's opinion about the 2002's looks, is noted.

It'll look nicer when the 'Domino's Pizza' sign is hoisted on top.
Can't get too excited about this one. Audi has it all over BMW these days

It looks like it was going to be a very nice design, then at the last minute a supervisor walked over and said, "Matt, I think you can get a few more body lines on that car. And add some sort of bumper openings that will appeal to the now aging ricers who may have money."

Why can't BMW just do a retro 2002 or 3.0CS or 2700 with modern safety features? They would outsell everything. Enthusiasts would buy them, newbies would buy them, can't lose. Instead they crank out more of the same and this one's even in hideous rust orange.

They aren't going to make an M version of the 1 series. Hell, it already is an M version with 300hp...
For the same reason there is no Cayman turbo.
