Anyone here excited Michael Irvin got in the Hall of Fame?

Ever time I saw him on the NFL channel I had to immediately change the channel. I don't know what it is about they guy (OK maybe its his countless run-ins with the law and prostitutes) but I just can't stand him. I guess ESPN figured this out also by canning him for this year. It's a shame class acts like Thurmon Thomas has to share the stage with him. At least since he finally got in he can just fade away.

Anyone who calls Michael Irvin a "decent" footbal player really isn't a football fan. You can't argue with his accomplishments on the field.

Also, he gave one of the best, heart-felt induction speeches that I've heard in a long time.

Very well said. I may not agree with alot of what he's done in the past, but after hearing is acceptance speech, I'd say he's not very happy with some of the decisions he's made in the past. Sounds like he's trying to do the right thing by his family though.

I'm sure the Philly fans are just thrilled! Although I didn't like his off the field actions, I believe he belongs in Canton. However, being the Dallas fan that I am, it's kind of hard to look at the triplets (Emmitt is a sure first ballot) as hall of famers. I never really looked at them as being as dominate as they were, it was an expected role from my point of view. Not until I heard what fans of other teams had to say, did I acknowledge that they were really that good. So yeah, I'm glad Irvin is in. He changed the game, and the game changed the rules because of him.

FWIW, I also believe that if baseball would ever pull its head out of it's arse, it would realize that Pete Rose belongs in the Hall too.

what i have heard before it's the "howie" thing, i.e. howie long. meaning they were players that "may" have been hall worthy at some point, but the fact that they are front & center media members now they remain in the voters for halls fields of vision and get in on their 1st or second year. i tend to believe

never cared much for MI, and the short excerpt of the speech I heard sounded like he was again high on something.

I will give you he was big, strong and fast enough. He was a winner, but he was always a shady character. Put him with an average quarterback and he is just average. That is my opinion, yours apparently differs. Strength of character used to be important, not so much anymore. That is my opinion too, BTW

I have nothing but respect for most of the other men on those Cowboy championship teams, top to bottom on both sides of the ball, and I hate the Cowboys, which is sort of ironic, because my wife is a big fan whose father happened to be the lead guy on the crew that did the field. She has one of the stars from the helmets in the end zones, 5-6 feet across. Her dad gave it to her. They raffled off the one on the 50 yard line for charity.

On the field ....Irvin deserves to be in the hall of fame for what he did on the field....
it was good to see former Lion Charlie Sanders finally get his recognition to the HOF

For now. I wonder which speech he'll use after his next arrest

Hall of fame is for actions on the field. 88 was one of the best. He always gave 100% and help make the cowboys a dynasty. He has human failings like everyone on this board and evey other professional sports figure. That's not what it's about. (I suspect 89911 just hates the Cowboys)

Agreed. As a former lifelong Cowboy fan (renounced my fan status in a letter to that dickwad owner that hired T.O.) I agree he wasn't the greatest that ever played but he was certainly very good. He also wasn't a saint off the field but he certainly deserves to be in Canton. Even the greatest receiver will look average with no support so that is no argument.

He was a decent football player, and I know the game.
Being able to run and catch is only part of it. Being able to be a team player, and actually care about the team more than his personal stats is also required to be more than decent. He did not reach that level. I remember watching an interview with Troy Aikman after he retired. When asked abought MI, he said "he was a real PITA."

Yes, he did "give' a great speech.
Unfortunately he didn't write it or mean it.
The next day he was in the booth at the hall of fame game and I cound see what I consdider to be the real, selfish and dishonest MI coming out from behind the facade.

He was a decent fooltball player, but he is an incredible actor and deserves an emmy for his acceptance speech. Best acting I've seen in years.

I think I'd hold HOF players to a higher standard than his, but maybe just a sign of his times. Either way, I didn't get to vote.
