+1 for what skipdup said. Formatting does not remove the data, only removes the index. Also, running a magnet across the drive will not work. You need some serious degaussing equipment to reliably zap a drive platter.
I no longer sell my old drives. I perform a DOD info wipe, then physically destroy the drive platters. Acetylene works well. Data retrieval is no longer a dark art, and there are billions to be made in the identity theft industry.
