Old pocket watch and broach, pics. Sorry no spoons:)

Story is that it's from the early 1900's was given to my grandmothers sister by some big shot judge in NewYork around 1930 or 1940. The monogram is E A R best I can tell and were I guess his. The face appears to be porcelain?

Inside it says:

ILLINOIS WATCH CO.
SPRINGFIELD
15 JEWELS

Among other things.

Anyone know anything about these?

It sure does, thanks. That one is silver, but...

Also, what exactly does the "jewels" mean?

Garage
lendaddy - "15 jewels" refers to the amount of ruby bearings used in the watch, these days they are normally synthetic rubies.

I believe that the initials would be "A" the first name; "R" the middle name and "E" would be the last name.

My camera obviously sucks for these small detail type pics. But it's the best I can do for now. I have one too so I'd like to see what people say about yours.

Illinois Watch Co
Springfield Ill
Number: 218714
Here's a few crappy pics...

Is this a "C" or a "D"? Anyone? Sorry for the pic quality.

I'll see about getting some better pics with a friends camera maybe this weekend....

You might also try the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors at www.nawcc.org , they have a bulletin board on their site that you can post the photos to get information. Lots of watch experts there can give you the history and general information; however, they will not discuss value.

Your watch is a Illinois Watch Company "Bates", key-wind, 7 jewel, circa. 1878. The American Watch Company case paper is not original with this movement. The movement was possibly recased or the movement was sold seperately and then cased by a jewler. This cannot be determined without close examination in person. Do not loose or seperate this case paper as it might be oringinal to the case.

Values avg. ex. fine mint
$80 $100 $200
