Any HP laserjet gurus? El printero el loco

I ask this here since I thought we had a couple of HP tech guys in the membership...and I firmly believe every ounce of knowledge in the universe resides here somewhere

I have an HP laserjet2840 all in one on my desk and it seems to be going insane. It's speed has decreased considerably lately, especially on multiple page tasks. It will almost come to a page every 30sec crawl on a simple B&W document! Then it gets weird, every now and again upon startup or restart it will spit out a fax from memory that 3-4 months old!! WTF???

It's like the memory is full or something, is there a way to purge or wipe the memory? I didn't even know it stored old docs? Is there a way to view the memory?

Thanks,

Hold down GO & turn on. That will re-set factory defaults. If you have it connected to a network you either have to remove the card or re-install it on the net after. It's probably not the printer. Sounds more like the computer. Do a test page & see if that happens at normal speed. If so look at the computer.

Thanks, a couple things:

It is not hooked to a network.

It does not have a "GO" button.

Also, it does this on simple copy operations where a computer is not even involved. If anything it's more common on copies than prints. It will print a few pages then sit there making noise for 20 seconds before printing the next page and so on.

If it is happening on copies then it is most likely in the scanning unit. Try doing some scans & see if that is working properly. As far as repairs, call HP first. They do exchanges sometimes at a fairly reasonable rate. Repairs often tend to not be very feasible. The machines are so cheap that it's hard to justify spending much on repairs.

I adjusted a Xerox all-in-one with a sledgehammer in college. The first hit was close to orgasmic. This is an effective repair for the psychological well-being of the user.

To expand on this, turn it off, unplug it from the wall for about 5 minutes, then reverse the steps and turn on. I have a fax machine that refuses to accept that the lid is closed, so it stores faxes in memory and beeps (loudly) every 30 secs. The memory used in these devices only truly "forget", when there is no power at all.

If this does not work, use the big hammer or throw it from the top of your building.
