The Onion's the best.

Go straight!

Is this straight enough???

Straighter!!

NASCAR is more and more dependent on engineering. I don't think there is much there for the designer. It's a spec car series, especially now with the COT. The mechanics also play a huge role in the success of the teams.

it is the professional wrestling of motorsport, just a step above monster trucks. It could be cool but putting on a show for the less sophisticated has become more important that the purity of racing. when the show becomes more important that the sport I loose respect for it.

NASCAR began to change when the 'Big Three' got involved. (Win on Sunday Sell on Monday). Then France (Sr.) began his balancing act (IE: make sure no one manufacturer gets too far ahead of the others). One make too slippery? Change the rules. Cars going too fast (restrict them) ...etc ...etc.

(Yawn) I'll pass.

Monster trucks are cooler.

With the intro of the new car this year (raced at all tracks next year) the cars are all the same. Say what you will, but the people involved are some of the best minds in racing. I have never enjoyed or been a fan of watching the races for a lot of the reasons mentioned on Pelican from time to time - but do enjoy what goes on behind the scenes.

Tervuren 08-10-2007 04:54 AM

Funny, as I said the last time this was posted, but you could make something like that for *most* forms of motor sport.

Very true. Now, the real challenge is set-up and strategy. There are multi-million dollar machines whose only purpose is to similate the loads on the car during a race, and allow engineers to optimize what they can adjust or change.

For me, a race series with identical cars, going in circles, with no innovative thought or originality, and technology that dates back to the '60s? No thanks. I'll take the cutting edge stuff like WRC and F1, and the racing purity of SCCA events.

You guys are missing the point of NASCAR.

Grab a beer, lie down on the couch, and watch a race on Sunday afternoon.

I don't care who wins, so I don't get excited. The announcers have nothing interesting to say, so I don't really listen. Passing doesn't happen that often, so I'm not watching the "action."

BUT, the engine sounds are great. Very relaxing. I use it as white noise and it puts me right to sleep. Some of the best naps I've had in recent years have been watching NASCAR.

I don't see that anyone here has 'dissed' the people that design, build, test and make these cars what they are (engineers/engine builders/mechanics).

Just commenting on how it has become (for the most part) a boring 'show'.

onewhippedpuppy 08-10-2007 11:49 AM

Boring???? It puts people to sleep, you call that boring? Wait a second...........

pmajka 08-10-2007 12:03 PM

I don't have any idea about the track layout, but if it is a NASCAR track, it can only be Sonoma or Watkins Glen.

Better boring (relaxing) than annoying. Could you fall asleep watching The View?!? Or anything on the WE, Lifetime, or the Oxygen network?

Lothar 08-11-2007 07:33 PM

I think NASCAR is really lame because...well, it is.

So what? You still come around 360 degrees right back to where you started...just as much "going in circles" as Nascar IMO. This track sounds like watkins to me, ending with a big hill up the finnish.
