Rode in and drove a 997 GT3 - sweet!

One of the VPs at my company (large corporation, 50,000 employees) called me today and told me that he has something in the company garage to show me. Lo and behold, we get down there, and he's got a brand new white 997 GT3. Only option was PCCBs.

He took me a for a little spin, then got out and told me I could drive back. Unfortunately, he is still in the break-in period and didn't want the car to go above 4200 rpm (not like I'm going to go crazy driving it anyway, as I'd probably have to sell two internal organs to pay for damages).

But man, what a car - instant throttle response, the PCCBs would suck your eyeballs out, and the thing would throw you back in the seat every time you shifted. It would be a real hoot once you can get it up to 8K revs.

The interesting thing was that it was a pretty streetable car. If you set the PASM to soft mode, the ride was only a little stiffer than my Boxster. The only problem, which he has encountered numerous times, is that it is very easy to scrape the front end spoiler (though he claimed new ones were relatively inexpensive).

That is pretty much the car that if I had an unlimited amount of money, I would buy. Exact color, exact specs.

A day for the memoirs....

True words, goes for me too. If I had the money - that would be the choice.

Your friend, is he as passionate about Porsche as most of us - or just another guy with loads of money that thought 'what the heck, why not try one of them Porsche'..

That is THE Porsche right now. It'd take it over the 997 Turbo any day. (not that I have the money to do so)

Yes, my friend is passionate about Porsches. He has three that I know of - the GT3, an RS America that he races, and a 1983 911SC Cab with a supercharged 3.2. He's had Porsches longer than I've been alive (28 years, but who's counting).

In fact, his comment to me today was that I was the only other one in the company that he knew of who appreciates Porsches. That's why I got the ride/drive.

Now that's cool! Did you mention to him that if he gave you the bonus you deserve, you'd buy one to match his???

I have to agree - the white GT3 is my favorite, but I'd take any color if they're giving them away...

You are single--upgrade. Shack in an apartment and consider your car payment your monthly mortgage. Will JM be attending our DE & tracking this new addition to the stable?

I respect that the 997 Turbo is a mechanical masterpiece, but, I'm sorry - compared to the GT3, the Carrera, the Cayman, and 911s of the past, the 997 Turbo is just plain ugly. It's over-the-top. The front end treatment looks over-done, the tail is too busy with its grates and slits, and the wheels look like they're made of iron. Don't really like any aspect of it, except the performance... although I admit they look better in person than in pics.

Nah, I'll take a GT3, thanks.
