NASCAR at Watkins Glen
Race starts in a few minutes. JPM is 18th starting out...he was just as far back when he won at Sears Point.

Hopefully he has learned how not to overcook turns. He won't win, he's not that good yet.

Fun to watch but half the fun of the course is going down the toe of the boot and negotiating that huge turn and trying to keep momentum going up the hill. A sure fire way to spin the car and many do there.

Yep, after JP was out of the race, I switched to my DVR of the ALMS race...
Too bad Harvick was blaming JP for Truex's mistake.

That is true. I think Harvick intially thought JP was guilty just because it is kind of the norm for him to run all over people.

Those taxicabs are so much more entertaining on a road course than an oval. They really need a few more on the schedule.

The announcers were calling them "school buses".

Agree. I wonder how the majority of NASCAR fans feel about Sears Point and the Glen. Do they find the road course racing just as/more interesting than the roundy round stuff? Or do they hate these two aberrations on the schedule?

One of my friends, whom I go to the NASCAR race at Joliet with, refuses to watch or acknowledge the road course races. I don't know how representative he is.
I can tell you, it is easier to watch a race in person at Joliet than Road America. You can see everything that is going on.

Roundy round guys like to go in circles. They leave the road courses to the wine and cheese crowd. Some are starting to get that it really is a better challenge of driver ability rather than set-up. Some of those guys can just will their car up front.
Interesting to note that many of the front running Nascar guys came from open wheel. Stewart and Gordon were fighting for the lead. If open wheel kept it's act together, those two would be driving Indycars. TS was an IRL champ before they put road courses on the schedule.

In a recent poll of Nascar fasns, the vote was 3 to 1 in favor of adding a road course to the chase. Today's race was quite exciting.

More road courses, unlimited cubic inches, no more restrictor plates, more Robby Gordon and JPM punting people. They also need to let the drivers speak their mind, and whip some a$$ if the situation warrants. Hell even if it doesn't.
If NASCAR is the WWF of auto racing, I want to see some tire irons being wielded. ![]()

The road courses are fun to watch, especially since Stewart is my favorite.
NASCAR has plenty of options to spice up races, including ovals. track sprinklers on random timers push-to-pass buttons with 1000-shot nitrous allow smaller and bigger chassis' with scaled engine displacements (turbochargers legal). I imagine eyes would open if a Toyota Prius hybrid started winning. |

LOL
Before I read your comment, I was going to wonder if the poll results might have been biased due to needing any reading skills...

You NASCAR naysayers really crack me up. I don't see how anyone can deny that the race at the Glen today was not more exciting than any professional event held there in recent memory. And was viewed by more spectators, both in person and on TV, than any other race there. Granted, some of the sanctioning body rules are annoying and directed at fan entertainment rather than racing as a pure objective. But to deny that these guys are really talented is absurd. Do I tghink that any of them could strap into a F1 car and be competitive...ptobably not with maybe the exception of Stewart and Gordon....and then only in their younger days. There's a reason why the Montoyas and Carpentiers and Papis are trying to get rides. And it ain't about easy money. They're race car drivers who want to race in a highly competitive series. Finally...all of you who want to compare it to WWF, give it a rest. (Although I do think Streits quote "Cautions are the nascar equivalent of WWF folding chairs " is too funny). Why don't you make the proper analogy: Nascar is the NFL to F1's World Cup Soccer. Think about it ![]() |
