Lil Pelican needs help!!!! Chicago

My little brother is broke down in Lake Forest IL with his '67 912 and he's running out of options. I think its the points, hes says it won't start, it made some funny noises on the highway and then died on him. Any chicago pelicans willing to lend a hand?

- mm

I`am not near him but I know how he feels. Surely someone in Lake Forest is a Pelicanhead and could help a brother out. Just for his sake I hope he is safe off the highway. Many things to check if he heard noises, I would check the oil first thing . Then fuel filter if it won`t start. Could be floats have pin holes but don`t know condition of the ole 67. I wish him well and keep us posted.

No worries guys, he's back on the road. His dizzy jumped up out of the block somehow, random engine bug I guess.

I've noticed a few things along the way though: frighteningly little information out there about good Dr P's 912. No diagrams, little info. The car has points, no info on adjusting them here on PP, had to go to VW site. Parts diagrams are lacking too. I guess thats the joy of being a 911s little brother.

Mat,

Tell your lil' brother to get a copy of Clymer's 912 Handbook, undoubtedly the best value in an aftermarket service manual I have ever seen, bar none! It has a reprint of the factory owners manual included as a bonus!

Yup, the 912 Handbook by Duane Spencer is invaluable.

Also, go to www.912bbs.org and you will have almost as much 912 info as you will find here on the 911. Almost.

MichiganMat,
Tell lil brother that I have a 912 Workshop Manual 1965-1969 by Kenneth Ball and Autopress LTD. circa 1971. Manual seems to be quite extensive 137 pages, 4 1/2 pages on the dist. alone, including rebuilding same. I have no need for it anymore found it stuffed under the pass. seat of a 1969 912 that I owned years ago. It ain`t pretty but its all there.
What ever he thinks its worth plus shipping.....

The 912 is amazingly close to the 356 SC/C engine. I can't work on mine with out John Muirs "Idiots guide to keepign your VW alive forever" and both Elfrinks technical manual and Ken Ball's "356 A B C". You can also buy the Harry Pellow books/tapes. If more engine help is needed, I'd post to 356talk ( you can join it from the 356registry.org home page)

I thought the only difference between the early 912 and the 356SC was a strengthened crank.

sketchers356 - i know they are very close, but I'm not sure of the exact differences. I also know they had quite a few changes over the years.... Remember, I'm a mechanical idiot who needs an Idiots Guide to work on his 356
