film education
Since I'm actually starting to get deeper into creating video content, I figure I need to expand my vocabularly. I always feel bad when my collaborators will ask if I've seen film A or B and I almost always say, "no." Been busy with raising the boy and other things. But time to take the bull by the horns, and joined netflix last week.
So in the past couple days, it has been "Fog of War", "Seven Samurai", and tonight, "Ghost Dog" and "Infernal Affairs." All different, all amazing in their own right. For those that don't know, Infernal Affairs was the original inspiration for The Departed (evidently Scorsese changed the ending...I haven't seen The Departed yet). SOme beautiful shots though and a great twisting plot. Ghost Dog is a Jim Jarmusch film with a youngish Forrest Whittaker. See it. Be patient. But see it. Amazing. Got another 26 films in the que, and friends keep adding to it. I'm going to be busy. But mostly I need to now get the video camera out as I'm starting to "see" shots like I do with my still camera. New career? Who knows... |

I'm pretty spoiled for living in a small town with a first-class public library
![]() "Apocalypto" was the first film (in a while) to have me gripping the armrest. "Brazil" and "Gladiator" were also well made. "The squid and the whale" had one of the most complex and subtle scripts ever made. You need to discuss it with a counterpart afterwards to discover your bias' of "normal". Some other Samurai genre must-see's are "Shoguns Samurai"(favorite), "Sword of doom", and "Samurai rebellion". Mifune is 'da man.

If you haven't seen "we were soldiers" I recommend that one..... also if you haven't seen band of brothers that was a good one.... an all day event watching that.... I know they are both war flicks, but off the top of my head right now thats all I can give merit to at this time.....

"Brazil"
Heh. I love that movie. I'm also starting to think that we are living in that world now. Gotta love Robert DeNiro as a renegade air conditioning repairman...

Oh, and if you haven't seen it, watch "Memento". I'm probably one of three people that saw it in the theater: me, my wife, and the projectionist.
