Quiet

I'd say about half of my department (IT) is out this week.

Three members of my five-member team are gone. All of the people I eat lunch with are out.

Where are they?

GenCon in Indianapolis.

Sometimes, it's lonely being a car guy in an IT shop. I want to discuss the ALMS results, they want to discuss last night's WoW raid.

Welcome to my world. We're down from ~50 people in my building to ~10 because we're moving buildings. We don't move for another 2 weeks because we have to stay with the servers. On the other hand, my partner just left so I'm stuck here today reseting something between 50 and 100 passwords.

I've got two guys upstairs in the Solaris Dept. that are car guys. One is prepping an Omni for track events and works the corners are VIR on the weekends, the other is between cars. Everyone else in the whole dept. couldn't care less about cars and all I hear is about the latest wow raid, or about the latest health food .

Nothing that cruel...

And most of them have their work laptops with them.

We'll definitely be hiring within the next few weeks. We just lost one of our senior network Engineers and now my partner who was developing our monitoring systems with me.

It'd be really nice to have someone who knows Porsches!

hey, if their automatic "out of office" notices get emailed to each other, will they have like a billion emails in their inbox? you know, like an endless loop?

How about changing the settings on their office chairs? Raise or lower it, and if you have one of them fancy office chairs with 1,000 settings, switch them all around.

Harmless, but it will drive them crazy...

So far:

I hid a plastic spider just peaking out of the side of underneath a squeemish co-worker's keyboard.
I taped the sensor on another co-worker's optical mouse.

Back in the DOS days, my dad wrote a program that would reverse (so you saw a mirror image) of the screen if it sat idle for 2 minutes between 12:00 and 4:00 a.m. It was his way of telling his employees to go home...

In college, I installed a "random error generator" on my PC. It was fun to listen to my non-PC-literate roomate swear at the computer. (The same guy who would keep hitting the print button in Word until his document printed...and I'd come back from class to a dozen copies of his term paper.)

In training, we remapped the keyboard of a coworker. The "A" key was "J" and so on. A quicker way to do this is to switch their language settings to Cyrillic or something.

Still, my co-worker's PC's are with them, so I can't do any of these things...

How about the old crazy glue-the-receiver-to-the-phone trick? Or you could use duct tape, which is a little less permanent.

I came back from vacation to find all of my desk drawers filled with packing peanuts. No other signs of malice....simple and surprising. Clean-up was easy and made me laugh. The guy who did it is getting an Annoy-a-tron. Game on!

Musical Chairs

Take the fancy office chair out of the boss’s office and switch it with the ugliest chair. Whoever had the ugliest chair will probably be happily surprised to see their “new” chair, and the boss will probably be embarrassed to have to come and take it away. Of course, you better make sure your boss has a good sense of humor!
