anyone know much about Audi's?
 

I'm having problems with my 2001 A4 Quatro 1.8 turbo.. Getting random cylinder misfire codes.. runs like crap. changed two coilpacks out and it ran for a hour or two well then back to the same problem. I've got two more on order but wondering what else it could be???
Sorry to post here but the guys on the Pelican audi board are non-existant.

Actually guys it looks like it may have only been a loose coil pack ( two were definately bad).

Hehe...I have a -93 S4 Turbo Quattro and it runs like a stink!

Check coilpacks, check plugs (change if needed). On mine (has another engine though) there are long tubes between coils and plugs...they ofter deform from heat and crack.

Also, check fuel filter, it might be clodged.

We have two audis - an A6 for the family, and a TT Roadster for the wifie.

Both are great, both of the highest quality, and hardly anything goes wrong. Only other German cars are better.

You must maintain it poer manufacturer's specifications, but then you must do that to all cars.

No car is able to withstand neglect.

Allthough I did not follow this advice and I own a 100k + mileage A6 twin turbo, it is probably the best advice.

My A3 2.0 TFSI Quattro Sportback has done 24000 faultless miles.

Like you seem to have discovered, coil packs were a big problem for the B5 A4. Also be sure to check boots and plugs.

Both of which I typically found to be better than AudiWorld. AW really only seems good for the older models, and the early S cars. My '99 A4 was a good car for me, but many people haven't had that good of an experience. Of course, I bought mine after the PO had the timing belt break before the scheduled change, requiring a rebuilt head. He also had the joy of replacing the turbo shortly after. Ouch.

turbos are the pits. Think of theo tiny things spinning around at 22,000 RPM, heating up past the melting point of lots of metals, and past the coking point of oil, and I don't understand why people want a turbo, without realizing they'll have to replace them sooner than later.

Our 2.8 A6 is non-turbo, and has been reliable as stink.

Sorry this doesn't help you, 9dreizig, but if you replace the cooil packs with new ones, they will last much longer since Audi makes continuous improvements to all their parts. Your car is worth keeping if you maintain it correctly.

Recntly, my kids broke the left rear ashtray, we replaced it immediately (only $40), and there are now no issues with our car. As a 1998, it still looks new, the interior leather is still like-new, and it runs like a dream. My 14 year old son says he wants it when I'm ready to pass, so I guess even teenagers think its cool.

Besides it's paid for, it costs next to nothing to insure, and at 25MPG, it's cheap to operate.

For the '90s and early '00 Audis, the V6 is the way to go. Far less issues than the 1.8T. Unfortunately, while you can get crazy HP from the turbo, the V6 is pretty set, at least without a supercharger.

Seems like the older 5 cylinder cars ie first gen S4/S6 are a lot more durable. I passed on a 99 A4 1.8TQ back in 2001 and bought my 95 325is instead for less money. From a reliability standpoint, its been a slam-dunk. Same for driving dynamics..I do sometimes wish for AWD, however...

Audis sure are beautiful cars, though...

love my audi's, have a 98 a4 2.7l with 155k miles and running fine thou it tends to leak alittle, kinda like 911's. I drive a 00 a4 1.8l, a little gem, changed the timeing belt on it a few months back, easy.

My son has a 02 a4 1.8l which has the audi curse, a while back it was kinda misfiring some on hard acceleration, thought it was coil pack, it turned out to be loose spark plugs, fixed the problem. This car has a coolent leak problem, the air conditioner is busted, problems go on and on with this one. The other day I told him to **** can this one and get a new car.

The only problem I ever had in seven plus years of ownership of my 2000 A4 2.8qms was a failed water temp sender. I sold my 1988 911 to buy it, and bought another, 1985 911 after years of low car related costs allowed me to afford it. Of course, the car related expenses have gone up a lot after buying this 911 – not problems, but improvements.

I had a '96 A6 that ran for 10 years and 155,000 miles and was still a great runner and looked almost new. Unfortunately it sprung a fuel leak in an underhood hose that sprayed fuel on the exhaust manifold, the resulting fire killed a great car.

I do miss it.....
