Computer Gurus - startup problem

(Oops. Wrong forum. I wanted this in OT. I'll ask the mods to move it)

Guys,

This just started. Every time I do a re-boot of my old PC in the back office, I get a message telling me that Windows is configuring FAX and then I get a message telling me that I need to insert the CD "FAX". What the he11? I've never gotten this message before. I've run a Registry scan with an old version of Registry Medic and it's cleaned things up a bit in there. I've also run SpyBot S&D and AdAware. Heck, I even DeFragged it. Everything seems in order, but I'm still getting this message. The really annoying thing about it is if I press the Cancel button on the little message box, it just tries it again, and again, and again, etc., at least ten times before it finally gives up.

What the heck is going on and how can I fix this? I run Win2000 Pro with all the updates on an old machine running a Intel Celeron chip, but it has added memory and a bigger hard drive.

Here's a screen shot:

Scott, do you have the fax software disk? If so, throw it in and let it do its thing. There is not much you can do to fix the problem.

problem is Dave, I don't know if it's trying to configure Windows' own built in FAX, and if it is, I'm not sure which disk I'd use. Would it be the Win2000 disk I have somewhere?

Final solution: MacIntosh.

Sounds like the Symantec Winfax add-on for MS Office. Try inserting the MS Office install disk when it asks for the "Fax" disk. I have seen this before. It is easy to start the setup for the fax add-on and then not finish it because you don't know where the "fax" disk is.

One way to solve it - FDISK.

What's that?

(Never mind. I looked it up and I'm not going that far to solve this little issue, but thanks for the suggestion anyway)

He's on to it. The only thing is that it is looking for a file "1" most of the time, when Office has an issue like this, it usually asks for the "data.msi" file.

You can try and go to Control Panel, look for the "Add/Remove Windows components" and uncheck (uninstall) the Microsoft fax service. Although, it may ask you to insert a disk as well

Scott, I am going rollerblading, then off to KVNY to get my 911 and wash the underside of the engine, so that I can hopefully get a better idea of the oil leaks. Give me a call (cell) if you'd like and I will try and help over the phone.

SIG 220 .45ACP at point blank range?

It turns out that my HP Printer software was corrupted somehow, maybe when I did a Registry scan repair.

I found this out because I noticed in my Systray that the HP icon was missing during that whole "FAX" install issue, and then when I finished hitting the cancel button for about the 15th time, it stopped asking me for the FAX disk and threw the HP icon in the Systray. I decided to open the HP software, and as soon as I did, the FAX install box came up again, so I put the HP disk in and all of a sudden it was happy. It loaded the software on and gave me a "welcome back" message.

Again, I'm guessing the Registry repair software I used somehow deleted an important command - that's my guess anyway.

Thanks for the help guys. :)

Windows does all kinds of weird things. I do computer work for a living, mostly Sun and HP UNIX servers, and I still have windows issues, so don't feel bad.
