Gelnfiddich 30 yr old, baaaagh

My brother and I sip good whiskey when we vacation together. Middleton Rare, Bushmill's 16, and this year he brought some Glenfiddich 30 year old. We each tried a little and it was like raw alcohol. Undrinkable. Anyone else tried it. He would take it back but he bought it in the Bahamas.

Some of those products were developed over generations of hardened alcoholic abuse. Taste may vary.

You need to add a splash of water and wait. You can see the oils and smell the esters. A glass of 30 year old Glenfiddich will taste different in 10 minutes.

I will give that a try tonight, and am willing to be surprised. We have not touched it since the first two drinks.

So when they say to add a splash of "branch water", what's the best thing to use?

Any good water free of chlorine or residual odors. Filtered tap water works.

I think Howard had to leave unexpectedly, please send that bottle to me for proper disposal. I wouldn't want that kind of thing getting into the ground water. Think of the children!

My buddy and I went to a tasting last month. Learned a lot about the whiskey and alcohol in general. They had 12, 15, 18, 21 and 30 yr old to sample. My fav was the 15 yr. Best taste and smoothest IMHO. The most interesting part was adding a couple of drops, and I mean a couple of drops to the glass. Wow what a difference. Some of the years tasted better with the water and some without. Make sure you use a high quality water and only add a few drops at a time. I think you will be surprised! Here is the site and some pics of me enjoying!

Maybe you experts can help me-

I was at a friend's parents house.

He asks me what I want to drink, and I inquire about whiskey. He recoils, because he hates it, but reluctantly brings me back to his father's little cabinet. There were a lot of really expensive looking dusty bottles, and his old man was gracious enough to give me a sampling of a few.

I have dabbled limitedly in scotch, mainly due to the $ nature of it. Had some Glenlevit (spelling?), Glenfiddich, Pinch, etc. None of the super pricey stuff (some blue label once). Each is different and good in its own way. I don't think that this one is single malt, but I also relaly liked Johnnie Walker Gold Label.

Anyhow, back to the samplings. The first two were noteworthy, one of them being the oakiest scotch I ever had. But then, for the third, he tells me I only get a splash, and thats all I will need. Good god, this stuff made the world slow down- it was like a sensory overload, but not unpleasant in the least. I unfortunately committed the name to 'memory', which wasn't a good idea with this being a long night of birthday celebrations for my friend.

Can somebody here help me deduce what this was? Here's what I know-
-22 years old
-100-something proof (which I remember because this seemed high)
-MIGHT have been called Matlock, Mortloch, or something like that
-so good it makes time stop

I think I'd know it if I saw the label too.

Probably a Mortlach single malt cask strength bottling...usually 105-129 proof. Here's a 16 yo bottling...you can get older:

Am simply addicted to the 12 year Doublewood Balvinie, but tried some 21 year old that was close...

Never used to drink whiskey but last few years it tastes very good with a nice cigar...

Here's a pic of their 16 yo. They do bottle a 22 y.o. but couldn't find a pic. Additiionally, several independent bottlers market their scotch. The link below can get you moving in the general direction.

Sometimes I'll take an ice cube and stir it around in the scotch for a few seconds then remove it. The one I absolutely MUST add water to is Lagavulin.
