Sounds like your friend is just another lazy IT recruiter.

I get pimps calling me all the time for positions that are nowhere near my core skillset, and they always want me to hand over then name/number/email of people I know who might fit their need.

F*ck 'em - let 'em pay for a DICE/Monster/HotJobs account.

Smart IT recruiters know that they need to utilize every opportunity they have to "network" and this may happen at some unusual times/places. I sent my resume to a fellow Pelican back in January, he gave it to his wife, she gave it to her friend and I was hired by her friend's company.

Smart IT recruiters know the different between 'opportunities' and 'spam' - this guy is probably the same type that tries to sell Amway at family gatherings.

Well your example is totally different than the statement above. Nowaday, people need jobs, not job needs people. If one wants to interview everyone who sent resume for a reasonable IT position, he might have to interview 100+ people :)
