Motorist admits driving at 172mph
Timothy Brady was disqualified from driving with immediate effect
A motorist has admitted driving at a speed of 172mph on a road in Oxfordshire with a 70mph speed limit. Timothy Brady was driving a Porsche 911 along the A420 near Kingston Bagpuize when he was caught in a routine speed check, Oxford Crown Court heard. Brady, 33, of Harrow in north-west London, will be sentenced in September. The speed is thought to be the highest recorded in the UK for such an offence. Road safety charity Brake described the case as "shocking". If you want to do that speed why not go to Silverstone John Melling from Kingston Bagpuize's parish council Brady denied a further charge of aggravated vehicle taking. Rachel Burr, campaigns officer for Brake, said: "The idea that someone was driving at that speed is shocking and horrific. "The chances that a person will be able to control a vehicle at that speed if something unexpected happens is slim. "It is extremely selfish - they don't have the right to put other people's lives at risk." John Melling, who is clerk of Kingston Bagpuize with Southmoor Parish Council and has lived in the village for 14 years, said: "A lot of people don't even observe the 30mph speed limit through the village. "Driving at 172mph is quite amazing. If you want to do that speed why not go to Silverstone?" Thames Valley Police said they would not comment on the case until after Brady was sentenced. In 2003, car dealer Jason McAllister was caught doing 156mph in his 3.2-litre BMW M3 in Scotland. He was jailed for five months.
---------------------------------------------------------- That was the previous record setter's punishment. But 172 is pretty quick! |

Hawk....
The previous record was a police officer out of uniform in an unmarked police car cushgt at 159mph.. his excuse was he was 'seeing how fast it would go, in case he needed it'.... Naturally he was not punished.....not even an internal one... ![]() |

Here it is from Brietbart.com
A motorist has pleaded guilty to driving at 172mph on a rural A-road, making him the fastest speeder ever caught in Britain. Tim Brady, 33, was caught in a random speed check on the A420 near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, driving a 98,000 3.6-litre Porsche 911 Turbo in January this year. The current highest speed to result in a conviction is 156mph. In a short appearance at Oxford Crown Court, Brady pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving. His plea of not guilty to one count of aggravated vehicle-taking was accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service and he will be sentenced next month. Brady, of Harrow, north-west London, resigned from his job at car lease firm Helphire at its Abingdon branch days after police stopped him in the car. A spokeswoman for road safety charity Brake branded his actions "selfish". "The idea of someone driving at that speed is horrific. The chances that a person will be able to control a vehicle at that speed if something unexpected happens is slim. "It is extremely selfish. Nobody has the right to put other people's lives at risk like that." In 2003, car dealer Jason McAllister was caught doing 156mph in his 3.2-litre BMW M3 in Scotland. He was jailed for five months. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looks like your right, 156 is the highest with a conviction according to them. Who cares, 156, 172, all are plenty fast. |

Hello? Did the person who said that originally ever realize how fast a 911 could get to on Silverstone? I highly doubt it'd hit 172MPH there...
Nothing shocking about 172MPH, I've seen winds faster than that...I've been several hundred MPH in an airplane, yet they aren't *shocked* and appalled at those sort of speeds?

The point here is that the idiot was on a public highway, presumably shared by innocents that would be at great risk of getting in his way. No one has right to risk others with that sort of behavior.

I'll admit I've gone over what this guy was doing. Thing is I was I might see 1 car every 10 miles on my route. The vast plains of north Texas. Not 1 ticket in 22 years. All I've got to say is pick your roads.

As if you could just drive over to Silverstone and say, "Let me take a bit of a tour." Regardless of what the top attainable speed is.
gmeteer, I suppose you are correct, sir, but they keep building these uber fast cars.... |

This could also be said of the track, I know of several incidents where people not even involved with the racing where killed. Every accident(on the road, vehicle to vehicle ) I have seen, was not more than 5MPH over the speed limit. Generally around here, if there is a collision at speed, its either into a tree, or wild animal, typically at night. I guess it can vary with where you live though...perhaps in New York its a different story for you.

Now in 993 land ...

If he pleads guilty to 172, it is likely that he was going a bunch faster.

Out of every 150+ mph driver being caught, there must be a hundred more not being caught. Imbecile and dangerous driving but never the less not much of news.
There is a large island between Sweden and Finland called Åland. Apparently they have a system where you pay the fine according to your income. Recently a wealthy business man was caught speeding and fined a ticket for (in your money approx.) $ 7000. Ouch!
