I want to contribute, but it may be a little passe these days...

But... HAPPY NEW YEAR GANGSTAS.

Being called a Gringo is not different than being called a Yankee. It's not normally derogatory.

bivenator 12-31-2014 11:15 AM

I would disagree that calling a person a Yankee is not derogatory. It was often followed by the word carpetbagger when used by my Arkansas old school relatives.

Super_Dave_D 12-31-2014 11:24 AM

Then there is the 'Damn Yankees'. Those northerners that come down south and stay here!

yetibone 12-31-2014 11:27 AM

All the Mexican fellas I know call me "Yo". Letter J yields a Y sound in Spanish, and all that.

"Wazzup Yo!"

I call them by their given names if I know them, and "Hey man." if I don't, because I rarely run across one that isn't polite, and respectful around here.

My wife is from Buffalo, and has been indoctrinated into The Adopt-A-Yankee Program. Southernization is a long process, and takes years to complete. Far more time than it takes to become a doctor, or superior court judge, or bituminous coal...

I've been her sponsor for almost fifteen years. :p

I too have completed the 'adopt a Yankee' course and after 40 years have been completely transformed.

You guys haven't been paying attention.
Derogatory or O'ffensive is no longer determined by the person using the word.

It is determined by ANYONE who belongs to a "protected group" and has been granted the legal power by a liberal congress to use the opportunity as a money or power-grab.
All they gotta do is say "hey that's offensive" and you're screwed. Lose your job, get sued, black-balled, etc.
Unless you are using a slang term to describe a white male. They are NOT protected under the law.

Honky is not called the H word.

Why is that? Because white males typically don't use words as excuses to gain political or economic power over others.

Should they? Absolutely not. Words are just words. Until they are made illegal by idiots.

PS the idiot thing in no way reflects on this forum, the moderators of this forum, or the list of banned and filtered words on this forum.
Any resemblance is pure co-inky-dink.

The reason was so Pershing could practice maneuvers to get the Army whipped into some kind of shape before going off to war. I heard another version of the "Gringo" origin - true or not. It was that during that time, American soldiers wore green long coats. The Mexicans referred to them as "green coats," which later turned into gringos.

That is the origin of the word "Gringo", according to a friend of mine who is from Mexico.

As for "Yankee", that is a name for anyone that is not from a Confederate State.
A "Damn Yankee" is one of those outsiders that lives in a Confederate State.
A "******* Yankee *******" is one that moves South and marries your sister!

Super_Dave_D 12-31-2014 04:38 PM

The term Gringo goes way beyond Mexico and is used in almost all Spanish speaking countries and usually speaks to an English speaking person or Americans.

I am lovingly called a Gringo all the time by my lovely Chilean wife!!!

Hmm, seems I don't recall a time in history where white people were considered pieces of property and routinely called Honky while being stripped of their freedom, beaten near death with whips and
having their families ripped apart. I've been called nigger a few times, it wasn't funny and the people saying it had nothing but hate in their eyes. There is no word I hate more then that word and I don't care who or what race the person is who is saying it or if they put an "a" on the end of it.....but I know, words are just words......

the way i had it explained to me:

Caucasions would hire the African ameicans for domestic labor. they would drive into the neighborhoods to pick up the workers. and instead of walking to any door and knocking, they only pulled up and honked.

anyone else hear this?

besides everything else, i thought the original poster was satire?

sc_rufctr 01-01-2015 05:39 AM

The original poster may have been satire but when it comes to history a lot falls through the cracks.
Obviously Pancho Villa has almost legendary status in Mexico and as such there would be a lot of "embellishment" to his exploits and achievements.
