I've fished all my life. I've caught fish all over the world with every conceivable rig you can imagine. I've even gone salmon fishing in a canoe with a bow. (unsuccessfully).
I've completely abandoned the crane 'n cable approach to fishing. If I can't use a fly rod, count me out. I've caught tarpon, sailfish, bonefish, trout and salmon on a fly rod. I'd rather catch a 12" trout on a 3-weight fly rod than catch a 40 pound king salmon with a salt water reel. Fly fishing is active. Bait fishing is passive. Fishing a river or small stream with a fly rod is much more like hunting than fishing. It requires stealth, patience and careful technique. When you do it right, it's thrilling. You can learn enough in an afternoon to have success on a river. After you catch your first rising trout on a dry fly you will likely be hooked for life. |
Nice little video (not mine)
