Need iTunes help
 

Hi-

I'd like to drop a song I downloaded via iTunes straight into windows movie maker for a vid I'm throwing together. WMM doesn't recognize the .m4p file format that my iTunes are in. What do I need to do to make it work?

If you bought the song in iTunes you need to strip out the DRM. Without using any third party apps, you can simply burn the song to a cd via iTunes, then rip it back to your machine as an MP3; DRM will be gone and you'll have a usable MP3.

while we're at it, how come the cd's I burn don't play in my dvd player while originally purchased ones do?

OK, so if he had bought his music from Zune Marketplace and imported it into Movie Maker what would be the result? - the exact same thing.

DRM is everywhere nowadays.

Kool Aid is not part of the equation.

P.S.: I literally buy all of my music from iTunes and get the 256 stuff when available. Works for me but YMMV. Us "cult" folks are like that . . . :D

Could be several causes. The first that comes to mind is that the file type that you're burning is not playable on your DVD player.

For example, if you're burning mp3 files to CD, some DVD players do not recognize mp3s.

Figure out what the format is that you've burned to CD (.wav, mp3, .cda, etc) then type that file type plus the model number of your DVD player into Google for a quick answer.

Screw all those places. Get your music from a mp3 site w/o DRM. I used allofmp3 for a while. Borrow friends CDs and rip them yourself. Lots of options out there. I refuse to get railroaded into a format supported by one vendor (iTunes).

iTunes works for me too, but I'm more partial to scotch and Guinness than vodka.
Since I'm out of scotch and Guinness, perhaps I'll try a vodka/Tang combo since that's as close as I can get to your tasty Kool Aid suggestion. :)

Cool, that's what many people do, but karmically (sp?) it just doesn't work for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging and I think that the record industry has forced a lot of the piracy out there, but I feel better paying for what I use.

Besides, people these days have a different point of view regarding downloads.
When I was a kid LPs and cassettes were the only media available.
Bit Torrent and the Internet makes it easy to sample everything and then buy (maybe) what you want to keep.

And when the artists can't afford to live and make music any more, then what do you listen to?

The models are changing (again). Apple is pushing drm-free music. And you can buy direct from most indie artists.

I don't buy the "artists can't afford to live and make music anymore" story. That said I'm advocating the purchase of CD's. Going around and borrowing CDs from friends is nothing new. How many of us did that and made cassette tapes...The allofmp3 site is a pay site though admittedly I confident not a penny goes back to the artist or label. Sucks to be the artist in that case but that's the nature of digital music these days.

My bottom line is when I purchase a song I want full rights to play it where and when I want. I don't use the iTunes store because they further cripple my ability to enjoy the music with their non-standard format. It would great if I could right click the song and convert it to mp3 but last time I checked iTunes (year ago) that option was a non starter. "Simply burn to CD then rip back to mp3" is insane. I was pushed to this extreme because iTunes is such a flaming turd on a PC continuously crashing and locking up the iPod. If an artist misses a paycheck from me you can blame Apple for dat.
