Sounds like a worthy program. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif |
Yes, thank you. It is a good program. I am in the construction industry, which is SCREAMING for young folks to learn the trades. Young people these days are hoping for more glamorous work, turning their noses up at these construction careers. Disadvantaged youths are more open to them. This is interesting because......those hi-tek jobs that today's young people are lusting for......are at risk of outsourcing. Not so with construction jobs. A typical journeyman wage is in the $30-$35 range, with $12-$15 in benefits on top of that. Full health care, full retirement accounts, etc. In three decades, these disadvantaged youths will have homes and boats and kids in college. Maybe not so for the kids hoping to program video games. I feel entirely comfortable pushing these careers.

Yes, we lose something when we start to look down on physical labor - regardless of how well it pays, the needs we have and the technical skills it demands. I did some construction in college and still love to build stuff and volunteer.
I am in the marine industry (on the landlubber side) my old boss had been a boat builder, research diver, charter boat captain and inter-island pilot. He used to look around the office and say "this is NOT men's work". We would all look at our shoes and agree...:( |
