vinyl to cd/mp3

As I am now the most unpacked that I have been in the last 10 years, I now have my "gulp" album collection out of boxes and on a shelf in my library. Much of what I have is not and never will be on cd or mp3. I still have my turntable (and a needle thanks to ebay). I can park my laptop next to the stereo and patch into the mic input.

Whats the best free or almost free software out there for transferring the tracks to digital?

TIA

Here are some straight forward instructions... http://www.robertsplace.ca/computers/04vinyltodigital.htm

Includes a link to free Soundforge Audacity software to copy and clean your recordings.

My son has an "USB turntable" that he uses to play albums and convert them (minus the pops and clicks) to MP3 format. I think we paid $150 for the turntable and he's charging folks $2.00 per album and that's how he's making spending $. Numark makes the USB device and it comes with the necessary software and it's pretty easy to use.

I converted mine with Wave Creator from Blaze Audio. Got good results, but it takes forever to record from vinyl in realtime. Cost was nominal and the software allows you to capture any audio you can get to play on your sound card. I have scalped many an mp3 from streaming websites.
