Windows Outlook Express.. Where are my old emails stored?
Got a new puter (Vista) and want to transfer some of my old emails from the old computer to the new. I selected files, compact and was told I could then "find" the file and move it to another disk to move to the new puter. Can't figure out where Outlook Express is storing those old emails. BTW, its a Window ME puter. Any advise. I think I've got the address books, at least I told it to move them to a CD, but haven't written it yet.

Search your hard drive for files ending in *.dbx . You should be able to figure it out from there.

Look in a directory like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express You'll need to unhide hidden files and folders. In windows explorer: Tools menu -> Folder Options -> View tab -> select Show hidden files and folders |
Open OE, then click on Tools, and scroll down to options.
Click on the Maintenance tab, then click on "store folder." Highlight text (or right-click & select all), then right click and copy. Cancel out of text box and OE options. Click the start button scroll up to Run, right-click text box, click paste, and hit ok. Copy/save all of the contents in that folder to get your inbox, drafts, sent messages, etc. |
Very cool, I tried Eric's method and its definitely working. Thanks guys, PPOT is great, just great!

Eric,
I have several *.PST files, some that have data and emails as well as addresses and dates that I want/need and some that do not. Believe its 3-4 files total. How can I merge all of these into one without losing any of the data and still keeping everything intact? Thx, Joe |
Joe--
Its pretty straightforward. I bought my wife a new PC and imported all her Outlook emails to the new PC with minimal hassle. Quick answer is that you can export each of the files and then re-import them to the new computer and/or email program. One of the options will be whether you want to allow duplicates (don't know if you have any dupes or not). What you don't say is whether you are doing this on a single machine or moving to a new one. |
Can somebody tell me how to download Outlook Express? Is it in Explorer?
I just bought a used laptop with Explorer, but no outlook express. thanks. |
