Mcafee couldn't get rid of trojan
 

I had a serious problem with the puter, but mcafee didn't find anything. I ran ad-aware but that came up empty, then spy-bot pulled up a couple of Torpig files in windows/temp. Evidently it's a combination trojan, keylogger, and spyware. Records everything on your puter and sends it out to someone. My firewall stopped the transmissions but that just about killed my IE.
I tried to get rid of them, no joy. Protected, in use by another program, couldn't delete them or move them or re-name them. Even tried in safe mode and went after them in DOS but I couldn't remember all the commands, been too long.
I finally grew a pair and went to regedit and found the culprits, IBM00001 and IBM0002.

I deleted them both and problem went by-by.

I wonder why Mcafee couldn't find them but they have no problem finding my credit card number when renewal time comes around?
Next year I'm switching back to norton.

Well, the good news is that you got rid of the problem. The bad news is that you're thinking of going to Norton.

If you change, I'd definitely avoid Norton. There are a couple of good ones out there, but I'd recommend Trend Micro above Norton. Norton used to be a great product, but when they got a good reputation and everyone started buying them they let their quality slip. These days they don't update often enough and the apps are memory hogs.

Funny you should say that, I can get trend micro free from work but for some reason I got the impression it was a low budget version that wasn't as good. I'll give it a try, thanks. I had norton years ago and it was OK, haven't messed with it few a few years.

I'm no 'puter wonk so fooling with things like the registry make me nervous. I have no problem takin apart a transmission or engine but opening regedit gives me cold sweats. Doan know what I'm doing in there.

Try Ad-Aware and/or Spyware Doctor.

Ad-Aware is very good and very free.

Spyware Doctor will do a scan but not clean for free.

I have ad-aware and ran it but it missed the problem. I then ran spybot and found the problem files.
I was told a couple of years ago to run both because sometimes one will find a problem the other won't.

So let's see, I can pay for junk anti-virus like mcsoppy or nortoon or I can use the best, Avast for free. Let me think?

I've heard good things about Trend Micro and will be going there when my current AV subscriptions run out.

While the freeware detectors were about average in tests, who wants average when your data/machine is attacked. Basically, you get what you pay for...

I've heard good stuff about Avast, but I've seen tests that showed Trend Micro as the tops, and the last two companies that I worked for use it. I've used it for 2-3 years. It seems to work very well.

I used to use Ad-Aware and Spybot, but got rid of both and use the free Windows Defender thing these days. It seems to work really well.

I leave my PC on 24/7/365, and it's always connected to the net via DSL. I haven't had any virus/spyware issues in many years. I use 3 pieces of software to stay protected, Trend Micro, Windows Defender, and a firewall app.

I've used Trend Micro for two years and really like it. I bought it when my Norton couldn't fix a problem. Yup, I paid for and extended Norton subscription and then trashed the POS.

Win2000 professional here. I've had some success by booting into "Safe Mode with networking" then running the online trend micro scanner "housecalls" It might be worth a try.

AVG antivirus is one of the best secrets of the net. GREAT protection and its free. Whenever I used a big subscription antivirus I would get viruses. 4 years with AVG and not one.

We would Trend Micro @work and it seems to work pretty well, and it's not terribly expensive.

On the other hand, I use NOD-32 at home and I like it a lot. It's small, fast, and doesn't take up a ton of resources like many other scanners do.

Screw McAfee! I don't care if their product is worth a crap or not, since I've experienced their bait and switch billing policy.

+1 on Norton.
I really used to love and trust their products. But their apps slow my systems unbelievably.

I've tried AVG and did not care for it. I may give Trend a try.
