Jorma Kaukonen

Who?

Jorma Kaukonen was one of the founders and guitar player of Jefferson Airplane (NOT starship) that went on to form Hot Tuna, he also backed up Janis Joplin.
He is touring on his own and playing in Ventura, CA. Oct. 3rd.

Anyone seen him? I'm thinking it might be an interesting show to see.

Scott, He's also playing McCabe's Guitar Shop on Pico Sept. 28/29. Great place to see live acoustic music. Also, David Lindley is playing there Nov. 10/11. You can get tickets at 310.828.4497 or

Dating myself a bit here, used to go see Jorma/Hot Tuna at the Calderone in Hemstead LI.

Was always interesting, he'd bill it as an Acoustic show and play electric, or bill it as an electric show and do all acoustic, or he'd simply not show up at all.

He's a lot more predictable these days.

I'd go in a heartbeat.

Have you seen Jorma preform, what sort of stuff does he do now?

Thanks for the heads up Craig, I think I saw Leo Kottke at McCabes back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

David Lindley gig is duly noted.

Ventura is about an hour and a half drive so I was thinking of using this as an excuse to take a few days off and lounge on the beach... he is also playing a big theater that I am pretty sure he won't fill up so I can stretch out and relax while listening to the show... and there are bars, restaurants, and hotels all easy walking distance to the theater. I have been there a few times (can you tell?) and it make for a nice concert experience, have dinner, a few drinks, see the show, walk back to your room (it sound like I am writing a commercial!) Unfortunately (for me) the theater caters mostly to punk bands now.

Leo Kottke...

Boy, there is a name I have not heard in years. Used to watch him at Red Rocks in Colorado... back when I had hair and he was almost unknown...

I've never seen Jorma before but The Ventura Theatre is a great place for music, I've seen tons of bands there. I come from the Ventura area and saw David Lindley play at Matilija Junior High School auditorium in the 80's and he is amazing (as is his wardobe). Also Jackson Browne is playing Libbey Bowl in Ojai for the Raptor Assoc. in October. Lots of good music coming thru there, but I agree, the Theatre doesn't book them like they used to. Canyon Club in Agoura (the old Whizin's) has a lot of great bookings.

Saw Ray Charles at the Ventura theater... and many others but my memories from those years is a little foggy. We would stay at the County Inn right off the freeway a couple of blocks from the theater... they had complementary beer and wine tasting in the evenings so we would get tanked up and stumble down to the show.
One time we went to see a hair band from the 70's and they were staying at the same hotel... cute little groupies running up and down that hallway.

Good times... good times...

All of us have been given life
and a space in which to live it.

And as we live that life
things are taken away,
because that is the nature of life.

And through that giving and taking,
we are given a better vision
of what to do with what remains.

Because something always remains.

I've seen Jorma (Hot Tuna) several times over the past few years. While their mainstream recognition is from the 60s with the Airplane, Jorma & Jack have been doing "the other end of the spectrum" with Hot Tuna since 70. One show was all acoustic, with Jorma, Jack and a mandolin great (Barry Mitterhoff?) all seated on stage and they proceeded to play one of the most enjoyable shows I've seen in recent years. This show was mostly older, more obscure acoustic blues (Rev. Gary Davis, for example), performed by three consumate professionals. Another show was supposed to be first set acoustic, second electric...Jorma and Jack came out, strapped on their electrics, and never looked back...again, consumate professionals who are still having the time of their lives on stage, and it shows. They would occasionally drop a "rock bomb" (i.e. the opening bass lines to "White Rabbit") as a teaser, but they aren't rock stars anymore, and don't want to be ! Don't miss Jorma & Jack if you enjoy live music...they deliver.

I hope I don;t need my flame suit...

I have always enjoyed the guitar work in the early Starship. Count on Me and the like from their early days. IMHO of course.
