Pelican brothers, I need some advice. I am losing my hair and gaining weight.

The latter problem is self inflicted. Just have to burn more calories than I consume. The hair loss is the biggie.

What have you tried and had good success? What shouldn't I try? By the time I am 50, I will look like an Asian Capt Picard.

To address my weight, I started taking the stairs at work twice a day. Lost just over 20lbs

For my hair loss, I have just accepted it. All the men on my mother's side are bald, so I'll fit right in. I still have hair, but it's receding.

This is what I tell my wife I'm going to do:

Interesting question... I just turned 50 and have the same problem. Like you said problem #2 is easy to solve with diet and exercise (which you should do as you age anyway).

For problem #1 I am considering the easy approach and just shaving my head. So far two of my lady coworkers have said I would look good that way. I also like the low maintenance aspect.
YMMV

Also, did you know that BJs help prevent hair loss? It's a fact.

Shaving my head is not an option. I have a lumpy skull.

Really? I'm thinning too so I guess it's worth a try.

I just hope I can get used to the taste...

It's only hair but as a targa owner, I feel your pain.

There is a lot of snake oil out there that promise the world. I would stick to the proven stuff like rogaine and finasteride (propecia). Even those can get expensive and have side effects. Hair transplants do a poor job (don't believe the pics-- it's mainly lighting and combing tricks) and all they actually can give you for your $20K is hair on an area as big as a credit card. Hair weaves/systems are uncomfortable and expensive as well. A good forum on hair loss is http://www.hairlosstalk.com/discussions/ Avoid the forums paid for hair transplant surgeons-- they edit out negative or contrary posts.

Cry me a river, Chris. I started losing mine when I was 22.

Man-up and shut-up.

One of the best ways to keep your hair and maintain your current weight is to stop aging.

Now that i'm 50 i'm having the same problems, but no matter how hard I look, i haven't found the fountain of youth.

Shave your head and buy a hammock. That’s what I did.

If you get a trophy wife, no one will notice that you are fat and bald.

Okay, so they will...but at least you will feel better about it.

Yes they will, and they will also assume that you're filthy rich

ps: I've been bald since college, just like every male on my dad's side (despite the female gene thingy)

All kidding aside,
I have a friend who had good luck with Rogaine. He started with it at 27 and hasn't really lost hair since.

I know someone else who got plugs, but they were a disater. They just look like a perfect grid of freckles.

Another perspective: Count your blessings that your current concerns are hair loss and too much food.
