Crazy idea for a race car?

As some of you know I blew the trans up in my Baja (Killer Bee). I drug it into the barn, threw a tarp on it, and let it sit. I am seriously considering doing some alterations and making it into a track car. It already has a MAJOR roll cage, fuel cell, race seats, R&P steering, harnesses, and full VDO gages.

I could swap the widened front end for a standard front end, get a full coverage one piece F/G hood, redo the tubing up front to fit under the one piece hood, lower it down, get some R compound slicks, and go racing.

This would be totally for fun, but what would be a good sanctioning body for a vintage Standard Beetle race car with some serious mods? Or would I be better off just using it as a DE car?

You need to do this. You know you want to. Maybe the open wheel roadster look. Put some disc brakes on the front though.

Well this is how it looks now.

This is the cage tubing...

I have a concept in my head of what it would look like but lack photoshop "skills".

DUDE, that is SO cool! I was looking for something like that on Samba awhile ago, but I'm not really too sure what I'd _do_ with it. I was thinking I could go off-roading with my lifted truck driving friends and show them how it's really done:-P

That is really really cool.

Do it Shawn. My dad was thinking of doing something similar with his THING. The plan was to throw a beefed up 912 engine we have in the shop with a 356 tranny and disc brakes and terrorize the streets.

901 transmission (or maybe a 744? from a 356 C/SC) and a hot type4 engine

For now I will use the 1600 DP Type 1 engine. It runs great and has proven reliable although underpowered.

I have to put a new trans in it. The cheapest route is replace it with a swing axle. Ideally I would swap in an IRS trans.

I do need to swap in disc brakes at least on the front.

I like the idea of the open wheel concept. I think that would look really cool.

I am thinking a DE/Autocross car since I am doing this just for fun. No rules is always more fun.

I stuck an ad on a VW site wanting to trade the Off-road stuff for go-fast parts.

This needs to be total bargain basement racing. I have a Jeep to feed now...

That is it at least in spirit. I dig the look but I think being able to see out the windows might benefit me.

I am thinking about using a Karman Ghia F/G front end. They just look more Aero.

I have been reading over on the Samba about using a Swing axle and getting it to handle. While not ideal I think I can use one for now.

Shawn,

I'd find out a little more about the open wheel thing... You may find that most open wheel classes only allow certain spec cars

That's why I am leaning more towards an Autocross/DE car. Since it will be just a fun car I think the less rules the better. Plus I can't commit to a "season".

EDIT: Cash that check!

Don't DE's have regulations about open wheeled cars?
