Regarding kowing dumb people who pretend they're smart, I can only reply that I believe I know myself better than anyone.

I, on top of having attended a plethora of schools prior to high school matriculation, also had many subastute teachers.

Hey, some schmuck had to do it.

Paul, alert the mods. She has hacked your Pelican account. I swear this is her writing. But she just called me on her cell and was in a cab in Atlanta. So maybe someone else hacked your account.

Oh, one of my favorite overdone monologues was John Cleese's apology to Kevin Cline in A Fish Called Wanda when Kevin was hanging him out the window. Except, er, that one was pretty intelligent.

I BEG your pardon sir! I claim originality and will swear under oath that that which I hitherto wrote was spontaneous, directly off the pointy top of my head, sir! (sorry if I'm ranting a bit Olbermanesque here)

Very good. We have a beer fund which is paid into by people using the following corporatese:

1. paradigm shift: $50 (got 2 in one day)
2. win-win: $50
3. synergy: $10
4. utilize (instead of "use"): $5

You get the idea.

The very practical purpose behind our little practice is that customers feel more at ease when you don't speak like an HBS grad. This works for both HBS grads and regular-speaking folk. You are automatically inferior in the eyes of the dumb-smart person and you put the regular person at ease. Either case you win.

Whatever brings home the bacon, I say.

There's one on the God thread right now. I was quite surprised to learn Vizzini is French...

Inconceivable!!!

I feel like putting on a billboard: "IT'S ITS NOT IT'S"

I'll bet I've seen this misused over half the time it's written and it doesn't seem that hard to remember.

A friend in college had a store-bought T-shirt that said: "Your Nauseating". He never "got" what was wrong with it.

Crap! Paradigm shift! I knew I was missing at least one smarmy new age corporate speak phrase.

That's what I get for focusing on work and not PPOT!

My dad winces and groans when he hears people misuse "less" and "fewer". It's actually common even in tv commercials. We truly have butchered the King's language.

Mule 09-11-2007 01:59 PM

I once had a contract with a university and left thinking that dumb asses go to work at universities in hopes that people will assume they are smart. There were tons of "closet" dumb asses.

lm6y 09-11-2007 02:02 PM

Rick, I promise not to reply in the OBD2 thread again!

I'm sorry I upset you.................

The interchanging of "jealousy" and "envy" always makes me giggle. And whenever I hear a talking head say "wanna" or "gonna" I wince.

I didn't know we had that kind of people on this Board? Now who could they be?

sammyg2 09-11-2007 02:11 PM

I work with a few people who watch discovery channel or the science channel and as soon as they see a program about a subject they instantly become an expert.
They only catch a few questionable points from a program that may or may not be accurate and they insist on arguing these points.

Gonna gonna gonna wanna wanna wanna ;)
