Just my thoughts but... In the old days of immigration (my great grandparents are from Germany), immigrants worked VERY hard to become AMERICAN (learn to read, write and talk). Forward to today and the immigrants work VERY hard to NOT become American, they fight learning American english, they force the Gov to write docs in their language rather than learn to read American english, and pull the race card if anyone has an issue with them not trying to fit into American culture. As someone mentioned in a proceeding post; may other countries will treat you like ***** if you don't speak their language (if they acknowledge you at all, just travel to Quebec and try to talk in American english). I say... You're welcome in our country IF you will follow our rules/laws and work hard to become American (not african-america, asian-american, mexican-american... you get the point). Who cares what is spoken in the home, I’ve tried to teach my kids several other languages since they were babies (it works, they don’t know why but they can speak [be it not the best] German, Spanish, French and some Japanese) but American English is what they use daily. Why did I do this? So when my kids travel or move they can communicate without fear of being shunned where ever they go.
BTW - I’m American not european-american (I’m as sick of that labeling as I am with people who can’t/won’t speak the countries language)
