War on Drugs

Given the huge burden (dollars, productivity, law enforcement, lives) that illegal drugs place on our society and the absolute failure of the War on Drugs, why hasn't our government, or anyone else really, created a series of genetically engineered viruses or other types of pathogens that are specifically deadly to the plants that yield the drugs?

Seems like a no brainer and I'm fairly certain the world could live without poppies, marijuana and coca.

Sure, there are still laboratory-made drugs, but knocking out the nature's-made variety would yield real dividends I would think.

Thoughts?

The 35 year-old war on drugs has yielded zero results. Time to withdraw.

The term "unintended consequences" comes to mind. I'm not sure I want viruses or pathogens unleashed in an attempt to control drug use.

It's been a complete failure. But there's still a very large generation, like my folks, who believe it's the right thing to do. Until they're all gone, the war will go on.

Exactly, and opium is the source of some of the best pain control medications there are.

Legalize and tax I say. Also, we need widespread needle exchange programs, the single most cost effective prevention of blood bourne diseases, which is a big statement to make.

What do you think farmers use to control weeds in their crops?

The same provision that allows addicts to receive food stamps and welfare, and when those run dry, theft leading to incarceration which I am paying for.

So sure, have another spoonful on my tax dollars.

If it weren't illegal, it would be cheaper and they wouldn't have to steal to feed their habit. Do you drink at all? If so, then what did you think about prohibition before it was repealed. BTW, I think they should drug test those on food stamps and welfare. I don't happen to use illegal drugs, at least not for the past 25 or 30 years, but that's my choice. I still don't think its the gubmits business.

I think they use chemicals. I just looked at my lawn care products and found no listings for viruses or pathogens.

I think sharks with fricken lasers on their heads would be equally deadly, but far cooler.

Your missing the point Shaun, If its not illegal, you don't have to violate the law to get it. With illegal immigration, you HAVE TO break the law to do it.

I have misused the definition of pathogen, expanding it to include anything deadly to the intended recipient. My mistake. Still, the argument is the same: shouldn't we kill all drug-producing plants?

3 miles from where I sit, endless corn starts.

Marijuana is native to the U.S. Do you have any idea how much is still growing out there? I do...

Its cool, your topic did not seem to fit the tone of many of you previous. That said, I still don't want all the drug producing plants eradicated. I am about to start my own jihad on some plants right now. Burn baby burn.
