mmm…British firearms

If it's a miracle, Colour Sergeant, it's a short chamber Boxer Henry point 45 caliber miracle ...

I have recently returned from a trip to Asia with some fine examples of work from the British Industrial revolution. 5 Martini-Henry Rifles .577-.450. 3 of the pieces were manufactured in 1878 at the Royal Enfield Armory. 2 were made at a smaller arsenal named the London Small Arms Company. The LSA’s were made in 1883 and 1884.

The interesting thing about the LSA weapons is that they do not bear the Queen’s crown and the V.R. which, if present would indicate that the rifles were built to fill an order for the British Army. I think that these were bought in England by men serving in the Volunteer Crop in India. Perhaps these men were heading to the frontier to find their fortune. This is one of those “if they could talk” moments. The 1878 rifles could have seen service in the Zulu Wars, Afghan Wars, fighting the Indian Raj, Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan or even the latest unpleasantness in Southwest Asia.

Amazingly, the weapons work and I have intentions of cleaning them up and using them as shooters. Hard to believe that the metallurgy and engineering from Victorian England produced mechanisms that still function today. How many times have the springs been compressed and released in the nearly 130 years of service life?

I can't get enough of the Brit stuff. Just these 2 old Muzzle Loaders are the mainstay of my Brit collection.

Tabs,
Those are beautiful pieces.
There were a lot of Enfield-Snider conversions out there, but muzzle loaders like yours have almost disappeared.

Back from a time when the brits had BRASS BALLS.

I spoke with a 87 year old Britsish lady that moved here in 1947 yesterday.
Daphine just got back from being "home " to England did not have any kind words to say of her former home Her bigest discust was that there was very few British people there. She said that they just gave up their country and that the sun has set on the empire
