Recommendations for Women's watch?

I am thinking of buying my wife a new watch as her gift for delivering our daughter.

She has a Tag which is about 15 years old by now, it is stainless with some bronze looking accents, the clasp doesn't work well, etc.

I was looking at the mall yesterday and looked at Tags, Movados, etc. Nothing really knocked my socks off. I did like the women's Tags with diamonds in the bezel, but there is no way I am paying 3 grand for a watch, she would never wear it.

Budget is something less than 1k, I want a functional watch she can wear everyday, good quality, but also can be dressed up sometimes too.

Suggestions?

Got my wife a Ebel a few years ago and when we divorced that was one of the things that she refused to put in the community property settlement. Guess she liked it...

I love watches, but would never spend thousands on any watch. I mean let's face it, 3K will buy a new set of PMO's - know what I mean? (okay - I know - I'm weird...).

In the very reasonably priced 1-300 dollar range, may I suggest SKAGEN? I have a titanium black faced skagen, with small diamonds on the face. I wear it with everything from jeans to dinner. This is Skagen's website - oddly they do not show the titanium womens watches, but the stainless etc, are visible.

How about a Sinn? Very good automatic movements, durable, understated, high quality and made in Germany.

Get it from Watchbuys:

FWIW.

Best,

I would echo Sinn as an excellent maker.

When I got married this past Spring, I gave my wife a Hamilton Jazzmaster Automatic... she's nuts about it.

I have the Sinn U2 and Breitling Avenger Seawolf. Breitling has started pushing their ladies watches a little more recently. Sinn has pretty slim pickings in that dept. too AND they just had a price increase. The US Dollar really sucks and Sinn only has one US distributor.

Up the budget as a happily married man I can recommend that ....

I got a pretty good deal buying from thewatchery.com on a rather expensive watch (6K vs 11K as quoted on the local jeweller).

Ask around to find out what's the best watch store in town. Go there for inspiration. I don't know if mall jewelers are where I'd be shopping for a watch (from a selection perspective).

Even if you buy her something new, go ahead a fix the clasp on her TAG. I've got one that I've worn since highschool--it's on it's 19th year of service for me.

+1 on the Breitling. Get the ones with the polished stainless steel band.

I bought one for my wife 2 years ago, she loves it.

Whatever brand you buy be sure to ask if the dealer will give you a discount...always ask!

A dress watch? Something in the sports watch line for day to day wear?

Both totally different...just asked Cindy. For everyday, she wears a rugged sports watch. For dress, she brings her 1957 diamond decorated (diamonds on both the watch and the gold strap band) Hamilton that she inherited from her mother. When we got it, the band and clasp were broken. Luckily we found a good goldsmith to repair the band, and make replacement links, then to a good watch service guy who refinished the face, cleaned and oiled. It's an amazingly accurate wind-up movement.

Just getting this one fixed up was close to your budget...and I have no idea it's worth. The inscription on the back, from Cindy's dad to her mom, made the repair cost not matter.

None listed here match Cindy's, but you might consider a lady's antique dress watch, then buy something more rugged for day-to-day wear?

I wear a modern "Khaki" Men's Hamilton...I like it, it's tough as all get out, and I'm hard on watches. But keep in mind, today's Hamiltons are made by the same Swiss company that makes Swatch watches...Some nice designs, but they aren't really anything "special"....not like the oldies made in the USA were. Back then, the made in USA Hamiltons were considered top quality.

Would that it wasn't such a bite in the wallet to carry something out of a jewelry store. I'm fortunate my wife doesn't mind 'pre-owned' in the watch/jewelry department (as long as she has some say in what we do with the money we save).
