Dads: The Adventures of Joey & Rex
We're forging ahead with a Little Traveler book series that will correlate, if not just loosely, with the t-shirt designs. The main character is Joey who will go on adventures through time and location, meeting up with mentor characters, like a race car driver against the Vintage Racer series of shirts, and some lesson will be learned along the way.
We've been developing the Urban Dino line since day one and it's been a big hit. For spring, we're doing the T-Rex skull embroidered on T's and bitten madras-collared polos, some with screen art running over the embroidery, some just plain like a Ralph Lauren polo player. We've got the idea that Joey can have a little friend-mascot-pet that will travel with him. It could be a T-rex skeleton the size of a dog, or actual size, like Clifford. he will either get him on the first book, or 1 or 2 into the series. Animated versions are anticipated. here's the question for dads out there: Good idea or just too strange to have a skeleton T-Rex tagging along in the stories, either as a little friend or life-size? Preference for size? NOTE: to everyone I owe shirts to, hoping to get them out this week. Those are cool, Shaun. My 4YO loves dinosaurs.
Sorry, missed the question to Dads. I don't see a skeleton as an issue for young'ns. Think Skeletor. |

We bought Andi a dinosaur shirt from Kohls a couple of weeks ago. The big attraction??? A toy dinosaur was zip-tied to the hangar. Yeah, she liked the shirt, but the wind up toy pushed her over the top. |
Great designs. Ben Stillers' "Night at the Museum" has helped make skeletal dinosaurs less frightening. I'll bet this sells well.
|
Sounds like a lot of potential, there. My 2.5 yr-old loves dinosaurs. In fact, he's going through a stage (I hope it's a stage) where he goes through the house, roaring like a dinosaur at all times.
|
My immediate thought was Night at the Museum and how we all loved the T-Rex skeleton.
Then I remembered there is a cartoon and one of the characters is the Grimm reaper and he is a walking skeleton. My 4 y/o has tons of dinosaurs and plays with them all the time. As of last night they invaded the knights castle and now control it. A pet skeleton too weird? Nothing is too weird today. |
I think it is a great idea, maybe go with a pet-sized skeleton so you don't have so many issues to deal with as far as art/storyline?
Wasn't sure how the Dino t-shirt was going to work out with my princess-obsessed daughter Kimberly. However, she now loves it and it is so big on her she uses it for pajamas/nightshirt. I'd love to post a photo, but my digital camera is hosed. :( |
I think the T-rex should be FULL size. It would be great. The boys go into a candy store, and the T-rex waits patiently outside. You show the boys in the store, and you can see the T-rexs giant leg in the window, or he's peering inside.
Or they go to a natural history museum. They go inside, and show T-rex standing next to a T-rex skeleton. A guard says, "Hey, you can't bring that thing in here!". Then the guard notices the skeleton.... "Oh, never mind....." This thing writes itself! P.S. If you use the scene above in the book, you own me a t-shirt :) |
First, rough versions of Joey & Rex.
What do you think? What do your kids think? Any and all comments and criticisms are welcome. Each is of a completed character with various sketches surrounding them. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1215998969.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1215999024.jpg |

My kids are currently in RI, but I'm sure they would like them.
The characters look great and I think the T-Rex looks very good. The dimensions seem perfect to me for a cartoon character. You can tell what it is, and it doesn't look scary at the same time. Much better than the skeleton idea you had earlier. |
Looks good. The style of the drawings reminds me of a book we currently love, If I Built a Car.
