You have to check with your local Karting track, if you have one. The problem we had here 5-6 years ago was there were only oval tracks and dirt tracks. Sorry, but I was having none of that.
The SCCA will let your kid run a Kart at most venues when he/she is 7 years old? IIRC. Moroso in West Palm allows 5 year olds on track and even has special practice sessions for them so they do not get beat up by the grown ups and older kids. We do not participate in races outside Autocrosses. The track days we attend are practice sessions and its really laid back and relaxed. We just like going out a turning laps. I put my video gear on my sons helmet and then we review his laps the next night. He has improved a lot just from that. My brother goes out too, he has a 5 y/o son and he has a kart as well, I just finished restoring a 10 year old Kali Kart with a KT100 on it so now I have my own Kart as well. My sons Kart is called a Formula World Kart and it has a variation of a Briggs Animal engine on it. It makes about 16-17HP from what I have been told. Its pretty quick, the the gearig it has right now he tops out at about 60MPH. I hit the rev limiter on the straights but he has not yet, once he does we will gear it a little faster. I have a 4 y/o at home and I want to get him into something. I remember a couple of years ago Toys-r-us and Sports Authority both had a little electric kart that had 2 speeds, 7MPH and 15MPH, I am getting ready to track one of them down and take him out to an empty parking lot on Sunday mornings. This way he can transition into a gas kart when he is 5 with ease. I am still learning a lot, I am sure 125 Shifter could offer much more input than I, he is a karting veteran. I have some forums bookmarked at home that are the Karting version of Pelican I'll put up the links tonight. We probably will nto be karting tonight, its supposed to rain all evening. |
West Coast dudes I found this:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/for/437259163.html $150 each and they are $500+ new. I did some research and this looks like a good starter Kart for a 4 y/o to me. http://www.glowstickfactory.com/index.html?lang=en-us&target=d103.html http://www.go-carts-guide.com/honda-minimoto-go-cart.html |
Thanks Jim! That little Honda thing looks perfect. Many of the gas ones were still too big for him, typical length from seat back to pedals was 30". That Honda looks much smaller. We would spend that much on a Powerwheels, might as well get him something cool that he'll have fun with for a while. Only problem, he'd probably want to ride it on at his grandparent's house, somehow I don't think that thing would keep up with a 4-wheeler on their 40 acres.

I'll take some pics of the 5 y/o kids Karts at the track next week. They are so tiny its cute. I never knew they were made that small.
BTW- Just as many 5 y/o girls out there as boys. I think thats cool. |
Both my lads race. It gets expensive when both do it! Both great drivers. It's like watching Senna and Prost form the old days. The youngest is aggressive and fast, the older is smooth and fast. They are very evenly matched drivers but go about it in totally different ways.
